The Mystery of Random Noises
Slide 02
What Happens When We Make Sounds While Listening?
Humming, tapping, buzzing, or side-chatting might feel harmless, but our brains can only tune into one sound channel at a time!
When Noises Fill the Room
- Important directions get scrambled or lost.
- Classmates lose their concentration.
- Activities take longer because we have to repeat steps.
When We Turn On Level 0
- Everyone hears the exact plan on the very first try.
- Your brain saves energy for solving challenges.
- We finish faster and get more time for fun work!
Sound Detective Secret: Silence isn't empty space—it is active thinking space!
Volume Calibration
Slide 03
The Classroom Volume Dial
Smart listeners know which volume matches the moment.
LEVEL 0
Total Silence
Mouth closed, ears wide open.
Teacher instruction, hall transitions, quiet reading.
★ Required for listening
LEVEL 1
Whisper Voice
Only your partner hears.
Turn-and-talk, quiet checking with your elbow buddy.
6-inch distance only
LEVEL 2
Table Talk
Normal speaking tone.
Group projects, science labs, math games at your table.
Stays at your station
LEVEL 3
Presenter Voice
Clear & projection.
When called on to share an idea with the entire room.
One person at a time
Rule of Thumb: Whenever the teacher or a presenter begins speaking, your dial immediately snaps to Level 0!
Skill 01: Wait to Speak
Slide 04
Trade Noises for Calm Signals
Got an answer or question? Show it with your body, not your voice!
Step 1
Pause Your Voice
Close your lips gently and hold that thought in your head. Do not blurt out "Ooh!", sigh, tap, or whistle.
Lips resting, mind ready
Step 2
Raise a Silent Hand
Lift one still, calm hand into the air. Keep it steady without waving, clicking fingers, or moving out of your seat.
Still hand = High maturity
Step 3
Wait for the Cue
The teacher will see your calm hand and call on you when the instruction is finished. You will be heard!
Patience earns respect
Did you know? Teachers can see a calm, still hand faster than they can find who is making a humming sound!
Skill 02: Follow Directions
Slide 05
Listen to the Whole Story
Don't launch your rocket before the countdown is complete!
The "Early Starter" Trap
As soon as the teacher says "Step 1...", hands start grabbing pencils, supplies rattle, and people whisper.
You miss Step 2 and Step 3!
Then you end up asking: "Wait, what are we supposed to do?"
The Sound Detective Method
Keep your hands parked on your desk and your mouth quiet until you hear the teacher's magic launch word.
Park hands • Track eyes • Wait for "GO!"
You know every instruction from start to finish without asking twice.
Remember: Listening completely takes 30 seconds. Redoing an assignment takes 30 minutes!
Skill 03: Respect Classmates
Slide 06
Give Your Peers the Spotlight
When a classmate speaks, they deserve the exact same respect as the teacher.
Pivot & Look
Turn your head and shoulders toward the person sharing. Your eyes show them that their voice matters.
Show you see them
Zero Sound Track
Never mutter, laugh, beat-box, or whisper while a peer is talking. Let them finish their entire sentence.
No background tracks
Build or Agree
Think about what they said. Could you add to their idea? Be ready to say: "I agree with Jordan because..."
Connect your ideas
"Treat every classmate speaking as if they are giving you a secret clue to the treasure."
Self-Regulation Hacks
Slide 07
Urge to Make a Noise? Try This!
When your body feels extra energy bubbling up, use a silent release valve.
The Ocean Breath
Inhale quietly through your nose for 4 seconds, exhale slowly for 4 seconds. No whistling, just calm air.
Finger Taps on Leg
Instead of drumming a pencil on the desk, gently press each fingertip to your thumb or pant leg. Zero sound!
Jot It on Scrap Paper
Got a random exciting thought? Write one keyword on a sticky note so you can share it during free time.
The Water Reset
Take a slow swallow of water from your bottle. It cools your mouth and resets your vocal cords.
You are in control of your own volume switch. Practice choosing calm power!
Sound Check Challenge
Slide 08
What Would a Sound Detective Do?
Test your instincts with these common classroom moments.
Situation 1:
The teacher is giving step 2 of a project, and you suddenly know the answer.
Silent still hand & wait for instructions to finish
Situation 2:
A fly buzzes by your desk or someone drops a pencil loudly.
Keep voice on Level 0 and eyes locked forward
Situation 3:
A friend is sharing an idea and pauses because they are nervous.
Patient silence, kind eyes, and zero side chatter
You pass the test when your actions help the room stay focused!
Our Daily Commitment
Slide 09
The Sound Detective Pledge
Three promises we keep every single day:
1
I will keep my dial on Level 0 while directions are spoken.
2
I will use a silent still hand instead of making noises.
3
I will give my classmates the spotlight when they share.
