Core Concept: The Mental Buffer & Intent vs. Impact
The 2-Second Buffer
Everyone experiences raw impulses—irritation, snark, or impulsive jokes. A social filter is the intentional pause between experiencing a thought and choosing whether to give it voice.
Intent ≠ Impact
You might intend to "just joke around" or "be honest." But peers experience your impact, not your internal intentions. Unfiltered remarks break trust instantly.
Skill Practice 1 Intent vs. Impact Diagnostic
Analyze the gap between thought and delivery
Prompt: A peer proudly shows a new haircut or creative project. Someone blurts: "Whoa, that's bold... you're actually wearing that?"
Likely Unintended Impact on the listener:
Filtered Rephrase (validating, honest, or tactful):
2
Case Studies: Filter Off vs. Filter On
Notice the immediate difference in relational trust
Case A: A classmate makes an awkward public blunder or drops supplies. Hallway / Class
Unfiltered (Cheap Sarcasm)
"Nice hands, butterfingers! Did your brain turn off?"
Impact: Humiliates them for temporary peer approval.
Filtered (Tact & Support)
"Oof, rough bounce! You good? Let me help you grab those."
Impact: Defuses social tension and preserves their dignity.
Case B: A group member suggests an idea you think is unrealistic or confusing. Team Collaboration
Unfiltered (Dismissive)
"That makes zero sense. That's easily the worst idea yet."
Impact: Shuts down collaboration, creates defensiveness.
Filtered (Constructive)
"I see your angle. How would we fit that into our time limit?"
Impact: Challenges the mechanics without attacking the person.
Skill Practice 2 Live Re-Scripting Lab
Transform the raw impulse into tactical communication
Raw Impulse: You are partnered with someone working much slower than you. You want to snap: "Can you hurry up? You take forever on basic stuff."
Write your filtered response (or boundary strategy) that protects cooperation while addressing pacing:

The 4-Second Mental Gate - THNK
Run impulses through each gate before speaking
Gate 1 • T
Is it True?
Fact or impulse/hearsay?
Gate 2 • H
Is it Helpful?
Solves an issue or vents?
Gate 3 • N
Is it Necessary?
Must it be spoken aloud?
Gate 4 • K
Is it Kind?
Preserves peer dignity?
Skill Practice 3 Gate Audit Simulation
Score impulse before speaking
Scenario: A peer gives an awkward wrong answer in class. You get an urge to blurt a witty remark or mock them to your neighbor.
True? [ ] Y [ ] N
Helpful? [ ] Y [ ] N
Necessary? [ ] Y [ ] N
Kind? [ ] Y [ ] N
Based on your gate audit, explain your chosen action (what you say, withhold, or redirect):

Trigger Zones & Pause Protocol
Identify vulnerabilities to deploy your emergency pause
Emotional Flooding
When tired, stressed, or angry, filters drop and reactions bypass judgment.
The Audience Trap
The urge to entertain peers or earn cheap laughs tempts hurtful comments.
Screen Distance
Texts and online chats remove instant face-to-face feedback, increasing bluntness.
