The 9th Grade Surge
Real-World Pressures
Academic Stakes
High school credits, fast-moving assignments, GPA pressure, and heavier homework loads.
Feeling overwhelmed or falling behind
Social Friction
Shifting friend groups, group chat misinterpretations, rumors, and feeling excluded.
Impulse to snap or retaliate online
Sensory Fatigue
Sleep deficits, notifications 24/7, and masking stress while trying to fit in.
Freezing up, ghosting, or shutting down

Brain Architecture
The Amygdala Hijack vs. The Pilot
Neuroscience of Stress
The Alarm (Amygdala)
Survival Response • 0.1 Seconds
Reactive
- Sends adrenaline flooding your system immediately
- Narrows vision to immediate threat (fight, flight, or freeze)
- Prompts impulsive words, texts, or aggressive defensiveness
The Pilot (Prefrontal Cortex)
Executive Center • Requires Oxygen
Intentional
- Evaluates consequences before hitting send or speaking
- Maintains long-term relationships and self-respect
- Chooses proactive questions and firm boundaries
The Rule: You can't prevent the first 5 seconds of a chemical surge. But you control seconds 6 through 60.
Method
The 3-Step Signal Shift
Tactical Strategy
01
CATCH
Identify Your Body Signal
Notice physical red flags: tightened jaw, heat in chest, clenched fists, stomach drop, or shallow breath.
Self-Talk: "My body is signaling stress right now."
02
COOL
Take the 10-Second Pause
Inhale for 4 seconds, exhale slowly for 6 seconds. Drop shoulders. Take your fingers off the keyboard or phone screen.
Action: Buy time for the Prefrontal Cortex to load.
03
CHOOSE
Select a Strategic Script
Switch from defense/aggression to a clear boundary, clarifying question, or self-advocacy request.
Outcome: Power remains in your hands, not the impulse.
Catch the signal → Cool the surge → Choose the script The 3 Cs Protocol
Field Test
Real-Life Stress Drills
Apply the 3 Cs
Scenario A
The Grading Shock
You receive a grade far below what you expected on a major project. Your face burns, and you feel furious with the teacher.
× Hijack: Slams desk or complains loudly
✓ Shift: Schedules a 2-minute review
Scenario B
The Group Chat Freeze
Friends are planning an outing in a shared chat, and you are deliberately left out or subtly mocked. Your stomach drops.
× Hijack: Sends an angry, explosive text
✓ Shift: Closes phone, seeks real ally
Scenario C
The Slack Partner
Your partner for a biology lab presentation has done zero work with 18 hours until presentation time.
× Hijack: Ghosting or doing everything bitter
✓ Shift: Sends firm boundary & deadlines

Activity: Build Your Shift Script
6-Minute Protocol
Part 1 2 Minutes
Spot the Body Cue
On your paper or digital notes, write down the 1 physical signal that tells you you're about to lose composure.
Ex: "My throat tightens and my fists close."
Part 2 2 Minutes
Write the 1-Liner
Draft a single grounded sentence you can say out loud or text to de-escalate without giving up your boundaries.
Ex: "I need 15 minutes before I reply to this."
Part 3 2 Minutes
Partner Reality Test
Read your line to an elbow partner. Does it sound calm, clear, and firm—or does it invite an argument?
Partner feedback: "Clear" or "Too defensive"
Goal: Walk away today with 1 tested response script ready in your pocket. Action Time

Final Reflection
Exit Ticket Questions
1. My Body Trigger: What is the first physical sign that signals you are getting overwhelmed or angry?
2. My 10-Second Pause: What will you physically do during your pause (deep breath, step back, put phone face-down)?
3. My Shift Script: What is your chosen boundary or self-advocacy phrase for this week?
"Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom."
— Viktor E. Frankl
This Week's Challenge:
Catch the surge at least once before you react. Take the 10-second pause and choose the pilot seat.
