Part 1: Your Internal Alarm System
Anger is a normal human alarm indicating something feels unfair, threatening, or out of control. Your body releases adrenaline before your logical brain finishes processing. Recognizing your physical alerts gives you the power to choose your response.
Check (✓) all physical signs you notice when anger starts rising:
Clenched fists or jaw
Racing heartbeat
Flushed, hot face or neck
Knot in the stomach
Voice gets louder/faster
Tunnel vision / zoning out
Identify your top 2 personal triggers (e.g., being talked over, false accusations, feeling excluded):
Part 2: The Tactical Reset Menu
The biological rush of anger typically lasts 90 seconds unless your thoughts keep fueling the fire. Choose one tool below to interrupt the chemical surge.
Box Breathing
Inhale 4s → Hold 4s → Exhale slowly 4s → Pause 4s. Resets heart rate and blood pressure instantly.
Physiological Reset
5-4-3 Grounding
Spot 3 physical things you see, 2 things you can touch, and 1 sound. Forces your brain out of fight-or-flight.
Sensory Redirection
Strategic Pause
"I need two minutes before I reply." Never speak, text, or post while your heart rate is elevated above resting.

The Resolution Blueprint

The 4-Part "I-Statement" Formula
De-escalates 85% of Arguments
When people feel attacked by "You always..." or "You never...", their brain switches to defense mode. An I-Statement focuses on the real issue without putting the other person on trial.
1. Feeling "I feel..." Name the emotion clearly
2. Event "When you..." State factual behavior
3. Impact "Because..." Explain how it affects you
4. Solution "I need..." Direct, realistic request
Fire Starter (Escalation)
"You're a fake friend who only cares about laughing at me in front of the lunch table!"
Firewall (Resolution)
"I feel hurt when you roast me at lunch because it makes me feel isolated. I need you to back off that topic."
Simulation: The Group Project Breakdown
The Scenario: You spent 2 hours finishing your part of a partner science slideshow. Five minutes before class, your partner casually laughs and says: "My bad, I totally forgot to finish my slides. Can you just make something up real quick so we don't get zeros?"
Task A: What is an immediate internal coping skill you can use in those 5 minutes to stay composed?
Task B: Write out your response using the 4-part formula (I feel... when... because... I need...):
Golden Rule of Conflict
Attack the problem, never the person. Cool heads retain control.
