Curriculum Blueprint

The master architectural framework for the 20-week social-emotional learning program, featuring the comprehensive curriculum map and customizable lesson planning templates with graduated scaffolds for grades 6-8.

Week 1: Intro to Conflict

Week 1 introduces students to the foundational nature of conflict as a natural phenomenon and teaches them to identify primary emotions and bodily states using the 1-10 Emotion Scale.

Week 2: "I" Statements I

Week 2 introduces students to emotional ownership using a structured "I feel..." script to voice feelings without pointing fingers or placing blame.

Week 3: "I" Statements II

Week 3 teaches students to expand their "I" statements by isolating specific, neutral behaviors from personal character attacks using the structured script: "When you... I feel...".

Week 4: Active Listening

Week 4 teaches students to actively listen, mirror their partners' words, and validate different perspectives before formulating a response.

Week 5: Expressing Needs

Week 5 teaches students to state clear desires and needs with constructive requests, helping them move forward constructively and avoid passive-aggressive patterns.

Week 6: Negotiation Basics

Week 6 teaches students the fundamental principles of negotiation, introducing the concept of compromise, win-win solutions, and brainstorming mutually beneficial outcomes.

Week 7: Negotiation Practice

Week 7 engages students in low-stakes structured agreements, teaching them to identify "give and take" concessions and negotiate clean task splits in paired work.

Week 8: Problem Solving

Week 8 teaches students to implement a sequential conflict resolution cycle by breaking down complex issues and choosing resolution plans using visual checklists.

Week 9: Conflict Scenarios

Week 9 provides a comprehensive review of foundational tools (Weeks 1-8) through targeted scenario analysis. Students evaluate safety, match strategies, and synthesize solutions.

Week 10: Emotional Regulation

Week 10 teaches students immediate physical calming behaviors to manage high bodily arousal in conflict. They practice square breathing, mindful sensory anchoring, and checking emotional states before responding.

Week 11: Complex Role-Play

Week 11 engages students in structured role-playing activities to navigate multi-sided peer arguments dynamically, maintaining steady vocal volumes and sequentially layering multiple communication strategies.

Week 12: Feedback & Reflection

Week 12 teaches students to give and receive peer strategy critiques. They practice formulating kind, helpful, specific peer suggestions, and listing personal strengths in emotional regulation.

Week 13: Recognizing Triggers

Week 13 teaches students to isolate physical cues of rising frustration, categorize physical vs situational triggers, and draw trigger limits on a personal thermometer.

Week 14: Apologizing Effectively

Week 14 teaches students to deliver authentic, action-oriented apologies, utilizing a structured 4-part model that names the specific harm and focuses on active restitution.

Week 15: Respectful Disagreement

Week 15 teaches students how to maintain respect during opposing views, validating differing perspectives without mockery and stating opposing facts without personal character attacks.

Week 16: Peaceful Solutions

Week 16 teaches students to design collaborative, long-term win-win plans, draft written peer agreements, and establish check-in points.

Week 17: Multiple Strategies

Week 17 teaches students to stack calming, listening, and negotiation steps. They practice executing combined de-escalate and statement moves, and adapting their approach when the first resolution fails.

Week 18: Supporting Others

Week 18 teaches students to mediate and support peer conflicts safely, intervening constructively without taking sides and knowing when to summon an adult helper.

Week 19: Strategy Review

Week 19 provides a comprehensive review and drill of all conflict steps. Students practice selecting the ideal tool for any sudden mock conflict and peer-teaching key concepts.

Week 20: Celebration & Action

Week 20 is the grand finale of our 20-week program. Students finalize and sign their personal "Peacebuilder Action Pledge" and share real-world growth artifacts to celebrate SEL progression.

Connection Compass Unit

A comprehensive four-part SEL and communication unit designed by a school counselor to scaffold communication skills from Grades 9 to 12. The unit guides students from basic active listening in Grade 9, to clear self-expression and audience awareness in Grade 10, to conflict resolution and perspective-taking in Grade 11, and finally to giving and receiving constructive feedback in Grade 12, preparing them for college, career, and citizenship.
