SLIDE 1
Warm-Up: What is Communication?
"Good morning/afternoon, everyone! To kick things off today, I want you to take just a minute to think: What does communication mean to you? When you hear the word 'communication,' what comes to mind? Feel free to jot down a quick thought or two on your paper or just hold it in your mind."
"Alright, who would like to share their initial thoughts? Don't worry, there's no right or wrong answer here. Yes, [Student Name]? Excellent point! Anyone else? [Student Name], that's a great way to put it."
SLIDE 2
The Power of Your Voice
"Today, we're going to talk about something incredibly important: communication. It's something we do every single day, whether we realize it or not. From texting our friends to talking with our families, or even just raising our hand in class, we are constantly communicating. And guess what? How well we communicate can make a HUGE difference in our lives."
"Why does it matter? Well, effective communication can help you build stronger friendships, avoid misunderstandings, express your ideas clearly, resolve conflicts, and even achieve your goals! It's like having a superpower that helps you connect with the world around you."
SLIDE 3-4
Key Components
Sending a Clear Message
"To send a clear message, we need to be three things: **specific**, **concise**, and **thoughtful**. Being specific means saying exactly what you mean, not hinting. Being concise means getting to the point without extra words. And thoughtful means thinking about *how* you say something and *who* you're talking to."
Active Listening
"Next up, and just as important, is active listening. This isn't just about hearing the words someone says; it's about truly understanding their message. When you actively listen, you're not just waiting for your turn to speak. You're fully engaged."
SLIDE 5-6
Hidden Language & Empathy
"Now, sometimes, what we say isn't the only message we send. Our bodies and voices send messages too! These are called non-verbal cues. Your body language – your posture, your gestures, your facial expressions – speaks volumes."
"Finally, let's talk about empathy. This is about trying to understand someone else's feelings and perspective. It's about imagining how you would feel in their situation. It doesn't mean you have to agree with them, but it means you understand *why* they might feel or think a certain way."
Activity
Active Listening Challenge
"Now, let's put our active listening skills to the test! I'm going to have you pair up. One person will be the speaker, and the other will be the listener. The speaker will talk for one minute about a simple topic... The listener's job is to listen intently, without interrupting. After one minute, the listener will summarize what the speaker said."
