1. Warm-Up: My Brain Power
SAY:
"Good morning, super learners! Today, we are going to start with a warm-up about our amazing brains. I'm handing out a Growth Mindset Warm-Up sheet. On it, I'd like you to draw or write about something you are really good at, and then something you want to get better at. Don't worry about perfection, just get your ideas down! You have about 3 minutes for this."
ACTION:
Distribute [Growth Mindset Warm-Up] sheets. Circulate while students work.
SAY (After 3 mins):
"Alright, pencils down. Who would like to share one thing they are good at? Great! And who would like to share something they want to get better at? Wonderful! It sounds like we all have things we're already great at, and things we're working on improving. That's what today's lesson is all about!"
10 MIN
2. Intro: What is a Growth Mindset?
ACTION:
Display [Growth Mindset Slide Deck] - Slide 1.
SAY:
"Take a look at our first slide, 'Your Brain Can Grow!'. Has anyone ever thought about how their brain works? Our brains are incredible! Today, we're going to learn about two different ways people think about their brains and their abilities."
ACTION:
Display Slide 2 (Fixed Mindset).
SAY:
"First, let's talk about a Fixed Mindset . Imagine your brain is like a number that never changes. If you have a fixed mindset, you might think, 'I'm just not good at math,' or 'I can't draw.' You believe your abilities are set, like they're glued in place. So, if something is hard, you might just give up because you think you can't get better. Does that sound familiar to anyone?"
ACTION:
Display Slide 3 (Growth Mindset).
SAY:
"Now, for the really exciting part: a Growth Mindset ! This is like believing your brain is a muscle that can grow stronger and smarter with practice. If you have a growth mindset, you think, 'Math is tricky right now, but I can learn it if I keep trying!' or 'My drawing isn't perfect, but I'll practice and improve!' You know that mistakes are just chances to learn and get better. When things are hard, you see it as a challenge to make your brain stronger, like lifting weights makes your muscles stronger!"
ACTION:
Display Slide 4 and play video.
SAY:
"What did you notice in the video? What does 'the power of yet' mean? It means even if you can't do something yet , you will be able to with practice!"

Growth Mindset Reading Passage The Little Seed Who Wanted to Grow Tall
A Mindset Fable
Once upon a time, in a sunny garden, lived a tiny sunflower seed named Sunny. Sunny had big dreams of growing into the tallest, brightest sunflower in the whole garden. But sometimes, when the wind blew hard or the ground felt too dry, Sunny felt scared.
"Oh, I don't think I can do this," Sunny thought one blustery morning. "All the other seeds look so strong. What if I'm not good enough to grow tall? What if I just stay a tiny seed forever?" This was Sunny's fixed mindset talking.
Nearby, a wise old oak tree rustled its leaves. "Don't give up, little Sunny!" whispered the oak. "Every tall tree and bright flower started as a tiny seed, just like you. The secret isn't being strong from the start; it's about trying, stretching, and learning."
Sunny thought about the old oak's words. "Trying, stretching, and learning..." Sunny repeated. "Maybe it's okay if it's hard. Maybe the wind and the dry ground are just challenges to help me get stronger."
From that day on, whenever Sunny felt like giving up, Sunny remembered the oak tree. When the sun shone, Sunny stretched towards it. When the rain fell, Sunny drank deeply, sending roots down into the soil. Even when a little bug nibbled a leaf, Sunny thought, "Ouch! But I'll grow another leaf, and maybe learn to grow even tougher!" This was Sunny's growth mindset in action.
Sunny didn't become the tallest sunflower overnight. There were days it felt wobbly, and days it felt small. But Sunny kept trying. Little by little, the stem grew taller, the leaves grew bigger, and one sunny morning, a beautiful, bright yellow flower bloomed at the top.
Sunny was so proud! Not just because of how tall and bright the flower was, but because Sunny had learned that even a tiny seed could overcome challenges and grow into something amazing, all by believing in the power of trying and learning.
