Work Values Showdown
Lesson Facilitation & Career Exploration Guide
Target Audience: MS/HS SPED
Time: 30–40 Minutes
Lesson Overview
This activity is designed to help students bridge concrete job tasks with abstract personal work values. By rating real-world jobs and participating in physical movement, students solidify self-advocacy skills necessary for competitive integrated employment.
Prep Checklist
- Print 1 Student Packet per student
- Print Classroom Discussion Signs
- Place signs in 3 distinct room areas
Pacing & Step-by-Step Instructions
5 MIN Warm-Up
Step 1: Introducing Work Values
Explain that a work value is what is most important to you in a job (e.g., spending time outdoors, playing with animals, making good pay). Write examples on the board. Do a quick thumbs up/down to check comfort levels with physical versus desk jobs.
15 MIN Analysis
Step 2: Job Offer Evaluation
Guide students through reading the six job offers. For non-readers, read scenarios aloud. Instruct students to circle YES, MAYBE, or NO, and write down one thing they like and dislike using the provided sentence starters.
15 MIN Movement
Step 3: Kinesthetic Showdown (Classroom Discussion)
Call out each job title. Direct students to physically move to the printed signs posted on walls: YES / MAYBE / NO. Ask 2-3 students at each sign to verbally defend their choices. This reinforces advocacy and transition decision-making!
5 MIN Reflection
Step 4: The Twist (Final Choice)
Deliver "The Twist": They got hired for all jobs but can only accept one. Students complete page 4 of the packet. Highlight the main takeaway: "The best career is not the highest paying one, but the one that fits YOUR personal values."
SPED Accommodation Guidelines
For Struggling Writers:
Allow verbal dictation of responses, or have students circle the printed Perks and Challenges in the cards instead of writing them out.
For Kinesthetic/Autistic Needs:
Ensure adequate floor space between signs. Let students use colored index cards at their desks (Green/Yellow/Red) if moving causes sensory overload.
