Hook & Concept: The Power of Quilting
Gather students around. Show a physical quilt (or display Slide 2). Explain that throughout history, quilts have been used as visual storytelling devices—combining unique, scraps of fabric to create something beautiful, warm, and collective. Ask: "How is our classroom community similar to a patchwork quilt?" Emphasize that each student represents a unique piece that makes the whole class stronger and more complete.

Exploring the Four Quadrants
Introduce the "Weaving Stories" Activity Sheet. Explain that each student will design their own quilt square split into 4 quadrants:
Top-Left: Roots & Background (heritage, family)Top-Right: Spark & Strengths (passions, hobbies)Bottom-Left: Core Values (what guides you)Bottom-Right: Tomorrow & Goals (aspirations)
💡 Instructional Tip: Model your own finished quilt square. Talk through why you chose certain symbols or colors so students see vulnerability modeled.

Active Workshop & Meaningful Dialogue
Give students quiet studio time to draft and decorate their physical quilt square. Distribute the Weaving Stories Discussion Cards to tables. Encourage table groups to select a card and share answers while they draw.
Design Requirement: Remind students to trace their lines with ink and color fully. Instruct them to cut strictly along the dashed borders and leave the outermost "stitching border" intact.

Stitching the Mural Together
Have students bring their cut-out quilt squares to the class's designated bulletin board or butcher paper. Help students arrange the blocks edge-to-edge. Use a black marker to draw small black "stitching" dashes connecting each student's square to those next to it. Gather the group for a 3-minute gallery walk to silently admire the finished classroom tapestry.
Differentiation & Adaptations
Elementary Modifications (K–5)
Allow drawings, stickers, and magazine collage scraps instead of strictly writing words.
Provide pre-written prompt stems for values (e.g., "I am kind when...").
Focus heavily on the visual "connection" aspect when assembling.
Middle School Adaptations (6–8)
Incorporate color-symbolism guidelines (e.g., blue for resilience, gold for joy).
Ask students to write a brief 3-sentence artist statement explaining their choices on the back.
Incorporate complex geometric quilt pattern rules (e.g., symmetry across quadrants).

Your Design Requirements:
Draft First: Use light pencil to plan your text and symbols before coloring.Bold Colors: Press down firmly. Leave minimal white spaces inside your quadrants.Outlines: Trace important details in black ink so they pop from a distance!
Important Cutting Rule:
Do not cut inside the square! Cut along the outermost dashed border .
The blank border is where we stitch the blocks together. If you cut it off, your square can't connect!
