Defining Good Sportsmanship
It's NOT just:
Only about winning the score.
Following rules because you're told to.
It IS about:
Respect for teammates and opponents.
Integrity—playing fair when no one looks.
Managing emotions (Highs & Lows).
The High Ground
No Bragging
Celebrate with your team, but don't rub it in the opponent's face.
"Good Game"
Acknowledge the effort your opponents put in. Mean it.
Team First
Winning is a team effort. Give credit to your teammates.
Bounce Back
01
Own the Score. No excuses about the refs, the wind, or "lag."
02
Keep Your Cool. Don't throw equipment or blame teammates.
03
The 5-Second Rule. Take 5 seconds to breathe before you speak.
Game Day Rules
Expectations for Earned Break
Inclusion
Break time is for everyone. If someone wants to join and there's space, make room. No "closed clubs."
Fairness
Agree on the rules before you start. Stick to them, even if it hurts.
Conflict
Disagreement? Use Rock-Paper-Scissors or a quick vote. Don't let a call ruin the break.
Respect Time
When time is up, the game stops. Help clean up equipment immediately.
The Break Time Vow
"I will play hard, play fair, and respect the game. My character is more important than my score."

The Kickoff (Slide 1-2)
Briefly define sportsmanship as integrity in action . It's not just "being nice"—it's maintaining a competitive culture that everyone wants to keep playing in.
"Why do we have sportsmanship? Because without it, the game stops being fun, and eventually, the game stops happening."
3-8m
Winning & Losing (Slide 3-4)
Winning: Highlight "The High Ground." Discuss how bragging creates a toxic environment that discourages others from playing again.
Losing: Introduce the "5-Second Rule." Explain that emotional regulation is a "varsity-level" skill. Own the outcome without making excuses.
8-13m
Game Day Rules (Slide 5)
Go over the non-negotiables for the earned break time:
1. Inclusion
No exclusive groups. If there is space, the answer is "Yes."
2. Pre-Game Rules
"House rules" must be agreed upon before the clock starts.
3. Conflict Resolution
Rock-Paper-Scissors is the final authority for disputed calls.
4. The Hard Stop
Break ends when the timer hits zero. Cleanup is immediate.
13-15m
The Vow (Slide 6)
Read the Champion's Vow together. Have students sign their Champion's Checklist . Transition directly into the earned break time to put the principles into immediate practice.
Pro-Tips for the Teacher
Watch for the "Quiet Quitter": Some students stop trying when they are losing. Encourage them to stay engaged as a form of sportsmanship.
Narrate Positive Plays: During the break, specifically call out good sportsmanship you see (e.g., "I love how you two settled that call quickly!").

Check off the following commitments to ensure a high-quality earned break for everyone:
The "Open Field" Rule
I will actively include anyone who wants to join if there is physical space and capacity in the game.
Pre-Game Sanctioning
I will agree on all house rules and boundaries BEFORE play begins to prevent disputes.
The Ultimate Arbiter
In the event of a disputed call, I will use "Rock-Paper-Scissors" as the final, unarguable decision.
Immediate Bench
When the break timer hits zero, I will stop play immediately and assist with equipment cleanup.
The Champion's Vow
"I will play hard, play fair, and respect the game.
My character is more important than my score."
