Motivation & Work Completion Power-Up

Display Slide 3: Motivation Magnet: Finding Your Spark!
TEACHER: "Sometimes schoolwork isn't as exciting as our favorite things. But we can find ways to make it feel more exciting, or at least easier to start! One way is to think about why we're doing it. Earning free time, feeling proud, or even just getting it off your plate!"

Communication Superpowers & Personal Growth
1. Finding My Motivation Spark
1. Can you tell me about a time you felt really excited to do something? What made it exciting?
2. Sometimes school tasks can feel boring or too difficult to start. What usually makes it hard for you to begin schoolwork?
3. If you could have a magic "motivation button" that helped you start schoolwork, what would that button do or show you?
4. What kinds of things make you feel proud or happy when you finish a task, big or small?
2. Becoming a Work Completion Wizard
1. When you have a big project or a lot of homework, what's the hardest part about getting it all done?
2. How does it feel when you successfully finish a task or project, especially one that was challenging?
3. What kinds of breaks or activities help you refocus when you're feeling stuck or tired while working? (e.g., drawing, stretching, looking out the window)
4. Think about a time you managed to finish something you thought was too hard. What did you do to make it happen?
3. Being a Communication Champion
1. When is it hardest for you to tell someone (a teacher, a friend, a family member) what you need or how you're feeling?
2. What do you think might happen if you don't tell someone when you need help or feel upset?
3. Besides using words, how else can people show how they're feeling? What clues do you look for in others?
4. Imagine you feel frustrated or overwhelmed, but you can't use your words right away. What's one thing you could do or show to let an adult know you need a moment or some help?
Coaching Tips:
Allow ample wait time (5-10 seconds) for responses.
Validate all feelings—there are no wrong answers in this discussion.
If the student is non-verbal or struggling to find words, offer choices (e.g., "Do you feel more A or B?").
Use the student's interests (superheroes, video games, etc.) as analogies.

Teacher Guidance & Expected Responses
1. Worksheet: Part 1 & 2
Motivation Spark
Guidance: Look for both intrinsic and extrinsic motivators. Prompt with interests if the student is stuck.
Example Responses: Getting praise, earning screen time, feeling proud of a drawing, special treats, five-minute walk.
Taming Tasks (The Breakdown)
Guidance: Ensure steps are very small. For students with ADHD, "do homework" is a mountain; "open notebook" is a step.
Task: Clean Desk
Put papers in pile
Pencils in cup
Trash in bin
Wipe surface
Task: Math Sheet
Open to page 4
Read Problem 1
Write equation
Solve Problem 1
Communication Moves
Guidance: Focus on non-confrontational strategies for anxiety and ODD. Reinforce the use of pre-set signals.
Example Responses: Raising hand, using a "break card," whispering to the teacher, pointing to a confusing question.
2. Work Completion Activity
The Core Goal: The student learns that they can "shrink" overwhelming tasks. The process of breaking down is more important than the task itself.
Coaching Questions:
"What is the absolute smallest thing you have to do first?"
"If you were a robot, what would be your first instruction?"
"Where is a good spot to stop and recharge your wizard energy?"
3. Communication Charades Game
Helping the student identify clues:
Emotion: Frustrated
Clues: Tense shoulders, frowny face, heavy breathing, crossing arms.
Emotion: Confused
Clues: Tilted head, crinkled eyebrows, mouth open slightly.
Translating to Words:
"I'm feeling a little frustrated, can I take a one-minute break?"
"I'm confused about this part. Can you show me again?"
"I'm proud of how I finished my mission!"
