Warm-Up: Brain Freeze! (5 min)
Say
"Good morning, everyone! Let's start with a quick 'Brain Freeze!' activity. I want you to close your eyes for a moment and just think about all the things buzzing around in your head right now. Maybe you're thinking about what you ate for breakfast, or what you want to play at recess, or even what color socks I'm wearing!"
Do
Allow 30 seconds of silence. Then ask students to open their eyes and think of one thought they kept to themselves and one they shared.
"Now, open your eyes. I want each of you to think of one thought you had recently that you kept to yourself – you didn't say it out loud. And then, think of one thought you did share out loud. Why did you choose to share one but not the other? Turn and talk to a partner for about one minute."
2
Thoughts vs. Words (5 min)
Say
"Great job reflecting! Today, we're going to talk all about the difference between thinking something and when it's a good idea to say something. Take a look at our lesson title: Think It or Say It? "
Display Slide 1 & 2
Point to the busy brain illustration.
"As you just experienced, our brains are super busy! These thoughts are like private messages, just for us. But here's the thing: not every single thought that pops into our heads needs to come out of our mouths. Imagine if we said everything we thought!"
3
The K-T-H-N Filter (5 min)
Display Slide 3 & 4
"Just like a coffee filter or a water filter, our thought filter helps us 'clean up' our thoughts before they come out as words. We use the K-T-H-N filter to ask: Is it Kind? Is it True? Is it Helpful? Is it Necessary? "
KIND
Does it make someone feel good or bad?
TRUE
Is it a fact or just an opinion?
HELPFUL
Does it solve a problem or make it worse?
NECESSARY
Does it actually need to be said right now?

Practice Activity (10 min)
Display Slide 5
"Now, let's practice using our K-T-H-N filter! I'm going to give you scenario cards. Your job is to imagine you have a thought, and then decide: Should you think it or say it ? Use your filter questions to explain your choice."

"Now, open your eyes. I want you to silently think of one thought you had recently that you kept to yourself and one thought you did share out loud."
