Social Agency & AAC
Structure
Peer-to-Peer Asking
Activity Intent & The "Facilitator Step-Back"
Traditional icebreakers rely on staff calling on individuals. This session shifts agency directly to participants: they choose who to ask, read or signal the question, and lead the follow-up. Your role is not to lead the conversation, but to safeguard comfortable wait time, reinforce autonomy, and celebrate connections.
✓ Peer Agency: Participants hold conversational control.
✓ Zero Pressure: "Pass" or "Ask me later" is always respected.
✓ High Dignity: Questions honor adult interests and life stories.
Universal Communication & AAC Accommodations
AAC Device Users
Pre-program quick categories (Food, Hobbies, Music, Memories). Allow device users extra time to program responses before prompting others.
Visual & Gesture Cues
Offer a physical photo card or point to slide options. Encourage thumbs up, high fives, or partner-assisted eye-gaze selection.
10-Second Wait Rule
Resist jumping in to fill pauses. Processing complex thoughts or navigating communication boards requires uninterrupted silence.
Optimal Room Layout
Arrange chairs in an open horseshoe or semi-circle so everyone can see both the screen and peer faces without turning around.
💡 Tip: Place wheelchair bays integrated within the circle, not at the edges.
Materials Checklist
- Large display monitor or projector with slide deck
- Optional "pass-the-mic" soft foam ball or talking item
- Whiteboard to jot down shared common interests
