Lesson Timeline
5 min
Hook: Think-Pair-Share
Prompt students: "When was the last time someone asked you if you were okay, and they actually meant it?"
Goal: Establish the value of genuine check-ins over routine greetings.
15 min
View & Discussion
Watch "Are you okay?". Use the following Pause Points:
01:32 (The Counselor): "Is her response helpful? Why is she dismissive? How does Raquelle's arm change after this?"
03:44 (The Dad): "Why is 'just block them' bad advice here? What did Raquelle actually need in this moment?"
05:25 (The Gold): "What caused the transformation? What does the gold represent?"
20 min
Activity: Empathy Texting
Hand out worksheets. Explain the "Validation vs. Solving" rule.
The Validation Framework:
1. Notice: Mention what you saw (the "purple sludge").
2. Ask: "Are you okay?"
3. Stay: Let them know you're there. No advice.
5 min
Closure: Discussion
Which conversation was harder to write? Why do we feel the need to "fix" people instead of just being with them?
Visual Metaphors for Students
The Purple Sludge
Represents the sticky, heavy nature of shame and trauma. It isn't just "in your head"; it feels like it physically weighs you down and marks you.
The Gold Sparkles
Represents the healing power of empathy. When trauma is seen and validated, it loses its weight and transforms into something light and beautiful.

Part 1: Initial Reflection
Think about a time someone asked "Are you okay?" and they actually meant it. How did you know? How did it feel compared to a "normal" greeting?
The Golden Rule of Empathy
Validate the feelings. Do not try to fix the problem. Just be with them in the "sludge."
Scenario A: The Rejection
Phone UI Mockup
Your friend Alex just got the "No" email from the basketball team. They are posting sad song lyrics on their story.
Alex
i worked so hard for that spot. literally everyone saw me practicing...
Start with "Are you okay?"
Validate their hard work...
Scenario B: The Rumor
Phone UI Mockup
A screenshot of a private conversation about Sam is going viral. Sam is sitting alone at lunch, covered in "purple sludge."
Sam
Sam hasn't replied to anyone yet.
Reach out...
Tell them you're there...
End with support...
"Empathy has no script, but it always starts with presence."

Viewing & Reflection
Embedded media
Watch For:
The physical sludge that appears on Raquelle.
Dismissive advice from adults.
The moment the sludge turns to gold.
The Dismissal Trap
What the Dad said:
"Nowadays you can just block 'em. Case closed."
Why does this hurt?
It makes the problem seem easy (when it isn't).
It focuses on a solution instead of the person.
The sludge remains because the person feels unseen.
"Are you okay?"
Noah didn't ask for advice. He didn't ask for a report.
He offered presence.
