Navigating the Inner Compass: Anger & Attention
Person-Centered
The foundation of this intervention is a non-judgmental, empathetic space. For children struggling with anger and attention, the school environment often feels like a series of failures.
"I hear that you felt really frustrated when..."
Focus on the child's perspective without immediate correction.
CBT Techniques
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) provides the "tools" for the journey. We focus on the link between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Identifying 'Hot Thoughts' (triggers).
Replacing them with 'Cool Thoughts' (balanced view).
Session Roadmap
01
The Check-In (Weather Report)
Start with a person-centered check-in. "What's the weather like in your head today?" Allow the child to lead the narrative.
02
Skill Building (The Toolbox)
Introduce a CBT strategy (e.g., the Anger Armor or Focus Finders). Practice the skill in the session using role-play.
03
Integration (Applying the Compass)
Discuss how to use the skill in the classroom. Identify one specific "stormy moment" where they can try it out.
Supporting Attention & Focus
Environmental Tweaks
Visual prompts on the desk.
Planned movement breaks.
Preferential seating (near teacher).
Internal Strategies
Grounding (5-4-3-2-1).
Self-talk: "I am coming back."
Chunking tasks visually.
The Anger Storm
Helping children recognize the physical signs before the 'explosion'.
Early Warning Signs
Teach children to identify these 'Yellow Zone' signs:
Tightly clenched fists
Hot face or neck
Fast heart beat
Loud or fast voice
Hot vs. Cool Thoughts
Hot Thought
"He did that on purpose just to annoy me! It's not fair!"
Cool Thought
"Maybe it was an accident. I'll take a breath before I say anything."
Facilitation Golden Rules
1. Validate First: Before moving to CBT strategies, use person-centered reflection. "You're feeling really overlooked right now, and that makes you feel like shouting."
2. Externalize the Struggle: Talk about 'The Storm' or 'The Fog' rather than 'Your Anger' or 'Your Distraction'. This reduces shame.
3. Small Wins: Celebrate the moments where the child *noticed* the feeling, even if they didn't manage to change the behavior yet.
4. Collaborative: Ask the child what *they* think would help. "When the fog comes, what is one thing that helps you see clearly?"
