Morning Buzz
Tier 1 Morning Meeting • 2nd Grade

Lesson Objective
In this 15-minute Morning Meeting, 2nd graders will greet classmates, express feelings, and participate in a group affirmation activity to foster conversation skills and community building.
Why It Matters
Supports social-emotional development by encouraging verbal expression, active listening, and empathy—key skills for creating a positive, inclusive classroom environment.
Materials Needed
- Feelings Chart Poster
- Buzzy Bee Talking Piece
- Greeting Cards Templates
- Optional: Small bell or signal
Teacher Prep (5 mins)
- Print and laminate the Greeting Cards Template.
- Display the Feelings Chart Poster at circle time area.
- Place the Buzzy Bee Talking Piece where students can easily reach it.
Instructional Sequence

Welcome and Greetings
- Teacher rings a small bell or claps a simple rhythm to signal start.
- Students respond with a cheerful “Good morning!”
- Teacher models a greeting phrase and students echo back.

Morning Message and Feelings Check-In
- Read a brief morning message (e.g., “Today is going to be an amazing day!”).
- Invite 3–4 volunteers to share how they feel using the Feelings Chart.
- Students place a clothespin or marker next to their feeling on the chart.
03 5 min
Sharing with the Talking Piece
- Introduce the Buzzy Bee Talking Piece (only the holder speaks).
- Pass the bee around; each student says one thing they’re looking forward to today.
- Emphasize listening respectfully and waiting for a turn.

Group Affirmation Activity
- Distribute Greeting Cards Templates to each student.
- Students draw or write a quick affirmation for a neighbor.
- Exchange cards and share one positive word about each other.

Create Magic:
Write or draw a kind message for the friend sitting next to you. Use your brightest ideas!
The Exchange:
On cue, swap cards and whisper one positive word to your friend.
Management Tips
Signals
Use clear signals (bell or claps) to focus attention instantly during transitions.
Modeling
Show what active listening looks like: eye contact, nodding, and still hands.
Praise
Narrate positive behaviors: "I see [Student] is using our listening ears!"

Welcome and Greetings (2 min)
Teacher rings bell or claps a cheerful rhythm to signal the start.
Teacher: “Good morning, friends!”
Wait for students to respond.
Teacher: “I’m so happy to see your bright smiles today. Let’s say our greeting together! I say ‘Good morning, class!’ You say ‘Good morning, class!’”
Together: “Good morning, class!”
Teacher: “Excellent! Now turn to your neighbor and say, ‘Good morning, [name]!’”
Pause while students greet each other.
Teacher: “Wonderful job! You sound so caring and kind.”

Morning Message & Feelings (5 min)
Point to chart paper or board with the message.
Teacher: “Here’s our morning message. Today it says: ‘Today is going to be an amazing day!’ I feel excited when I read that. How about you?”
Teacher: “Let’s check our Feelings Chart. Who can show us how they feel today? I’d love 3 or 4 volunteers!“
Interaction Cycle:
Volunteer: (Places marker) “I feel because .”
Teacher: “Thank you, [Student Name]! You said you feel because . That helps us understand each other.”
Teacher: “I notice that some of us feel excited, some calm, and that’s all okay. Thank you for sharing your feelings so honestly!”

Sharing with the Buzzy Bee (5 min)
Hold up the Buzzy Bee Talking Piece.
Teacher: “This is our special friend, the Buzzy Bee! Only the person holding the bee gets to speak—everyone else listens like a helper.”
Teacher: “I’ll start by handing the bee to [Student]. Then each of you will share one thing you’re looking forward to today. Ready?”
Passing the Bee:
- Student shares: "I'm looking forward to..."
- Teacher: "Fantastic listening, friends! Let’s hear from the next person."
- Encourage passing the bee gently to the right.
Teacher: “Great job using our listening ears and speaking voices with the Buzzy Bee!”

Group Affirmation Activity (3 min)
Teacher: “Now it’s time to send a smile to a friend. On your card, write ‘To:’ and your friend’s name, ‘From:’ your name, then a kind message or draw a picture that makes them happy. You have one minute. Go!”
After 60 seconds, gently signal stop.
