Lab Station (Room/Class)
"The body speaks in signals. The mind translates. You decide the response."
MODULE 01 • BODY DETECTIVE
Somatic Signal Mapping
Week 01
The Concept: Your body feels emotions before your conscious mind even names them. These physiological warnings are called Somatic Signals. If you decode them early, you can regulate your stress loop before it spirals.
Signal Scanner Target Color in the zones where you feel heat or tension when stressed.
My Somatic Blueprint
The Danger Zone (Anger/Frustration)
What happens to your face, breathing, and hands?
The Shake Zone (Anxiety/Worry)
What does your heart feel like? Do you feel cold or hot?
The Steady Zone (Calm/Focus)
How do you know when your body is running on idle?
Somatic Check-In Challenge
Throughout Week 1, set an alarm or pick a transition (like lunch) to observe your body. Describe a moment this week when a physical signal warned you that your battery was draining:
MODULE 02 • COGNITIVE CYCLES
The Thought-Feeling Loop
Week 02
The CBT Engine What we THINK drives how we FEEL (somatic physical reactions), which drives how we ACT. We cannot always stop an automatic thought, but we can detect the loop before it determines our behavior.
The Lab Circuit Diagram
1. THINK The automatic thought
2. FEEL Body sensations
3. ACT Your physical reaction
Practice Loop Breakdown
Scenario: You study hard for a science test, but receive a grade lower than you expected.
Loop A (The Sinkhole) Thought: "I am terrible at science, why even try." Physical Feeling: Stomach sinks, fatigue. Behavior Urge: Slam notebook & ignore feedback.
Loop B (The Diagnostic) Thought: "This was a tough test, but I can improve." Physical Feeling: Alert, deep breathing. Behavior Urge: Ask teacher which topics to review.
My Own Loop Investigation
Map out a personal scenario that recently activated a stress loop (e.g., forgotten homework, a peer dispute).
1. Situation
2. Automatic Thought
3. Body Signal / Feeling
MODULE 03 • THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
Heartbeat & Breath Calibrations
Week 03
Vagus Nerve Control Command When your body enters high stress, your heart rates shoots up. You cannot directly control your heart with your thoughts, but you can control your **breath**. Slow breathing instantly triggers the vagus nerve to brake the racing heart.
The Box Breathing Protocol
1. Inhale
4s
Fill lungs fully
2. Hold
4s
Keep lungs open
3. Exhale
4s
Empty out slow
4. Pause
4s
Rest with empty lungs
Breath Rate Research Log
Find a quiet spot. Measure your breaths per minute (Count 1 inhale + 1 exhale as 1 cycle).
| Test Round | Initial Pulse / Breath Rate | Result (Post-Box Breath) | Muscle Tension (1-10) |
|---|
| Trial 1 (Desk Sitting) | ______ breaths/min | ______ breaths/min | _____ / 10 |
| Trial 2 (After Jumping Jacks) | ______ breaths/min | ______ breaths/min | _____ / 10 |
Weekly Breathing Hypothesis
How did Box Breathing affect your heart rate and shoulder tension? Write your observations below:
MODULE 04 • MINDFULNESS HYPER-FOCUS
Grounding Gears (5-4-3-2-1)
Week 04
The Anchor Technique When stress spirals, your brain gets stuck in the future or the past. Grounding forces your sensory cortex to lock back onto the **present room**. This pulls fuel away from the runaway emotional centers of the brain.
Present-Moment Calibration Drill
Perform this sensory capture scan right now in your current room. Write down your findings cleanly.

Target Environments
In which high-stress situation (e.g., school assembly, lunch line, silent testing room) would this grounding technique be easiest to use undetected? Explain why.
MODULE 05 • COGNITIVE REFRAMING
Detecting Mind Traps
Week 05
Brain Deceptions (Cognitive Distortions) Our brains naturally look for threats. But sometimes, they fall into habit traps and turn small concerns into full emergencies. Spotting these traps lets you upgrade from **catastrophic thinking** to **scientific thinking**.
The Three Big Mind Traps
1. Catastrophizing Making a small mistake feel like the end of the world. "If I fail, my life is over."
2. Mind Reading Assuming other people are thinking bad things about you. "They are laughing at me."
3. All-or-Nothing Believing you must do things perfectly, or you are a total failure. "I made 1 error. I quit."
The Upgrading Lab
Take these trap-filled statements and upgrade them to objective, scientific statements.
Trap Statement
"No one likes me at school because I had to eat lunch alone today."
"I completely failed my geography project. I'm ruined at school."
Scientific Upgrade (Reframe)
Weekly Reframe Discovery
Which mind trap does your brain run into most frequently? Describe a recent scenario where you spotted it:
MODULE 06 • INTENSITY MONITORING
The Somatic Scale
Week 06
System Calibration To prevent explosions, scientists monitor energy levels continuously. In the Signal Lab, we measure emotional intensity using a **Somatic Scale**. Your body reacts differently depending on which thermal zone you enter.
The Emotional Thermostat
Steady State Zones 1 - 3
Breathing calm, open mind, slow posture.
Active Alert Zones 4 - 6
Shallow breath, tight shoulders, rushing thought.
Hyper Drive Zones 7 - 10
Fight-or-Flight. Fast pulse, clenching, offline mind.
Custom Temperature Calibration
What pushes you from Green to Yellow? Detail a specific trigger or situation.
What pushes you from Yellow to Red? What marks the physical border of red?
Your Lab Protocol Override
When you find yourself spiking into Zone Yellow, what is the fastest somatic override (e.g., box breathing, physical pacing, wall push) that brings you back down?
MODULE 07 • MINDFUL SEPARATION
The Thought Stream (Catch & Release)
Week 07
The Observer Mind You do not have to fight every thoughts that enters your head. Thoughts are not facts; they are just mental weather. This exercise teaches you to **observe thoughts** from a distance, place them on floating leaves, and let them sail away.
Visual Mapping Activity
Identify three "sticky" or heavy thoughts that have occupied your brain today. Write each thought inside a leaf compartment on the flowing stream below.
Leaf 01
Leaf 02
Leaf 03
Observer Experience Reflection
How does it feel to think of your thoughts as separate things floating by, rather than listening to them immediately? Describe the difference:
MODULE 08 • INHIBITION CONTROL
Overriding Action Urges
Week 08
The Urge Interceptor Between the emotional somatic signal and your outward behavior lies a tiny **3-second gap**. This gap is your leverage point. An **Action Urge** is not a command; it is an automatic habit suggestion. You can pause, intercept, and override.
The Interceptor Formula
Step 1 Trigger/Signal
Step 2 Somatic Urge
Step 3 PAUSE (3s)
Step 4 Aligned Act
The Urge Simulator
Read each high-stress scenario. Write the automatic stress urge vs. your target regulation response.
Scenario
Automatic Stress Urge
Aligned Intervention
Someone cuts in front of you in the lunch line.
Push them, snap loudly, or internalize resentment.
A peer drops a dry sarcastic joke directed at your shirt.
Slam desk, throw a insult back, or walk out.
Tactical Pause Button
What physical movement can you make in that critical 3-second gap (e.g., dropping your shoulders, feeling your heels touch the floor) to signal to your brain that it is safe?
MODULE 09 • STRATEGY INTEGRATION
My Custom Signal Protocols
Week 09
Protocol Integration Every operating system needs reliable recipes for specific threat alerts. In the Signal Lab, we call these **If-Then Protocols**. By programming these decisions before stressful moments occur, your brain has a blueprint to follow.
Signal Lab Custom Code Cards
Complete these custom If-Then cards to build your final diagnostic coping toolkit.
Protocol 01: Hyper Activation
If I feel physical sensations like:
Then I will execute this tool:
Protocol 02: Shutdown/Anxiety
If I feel physical sensations like:
Then I will execute this tool:
Coping Buddy Activation
If you cannot remember your recipes during a critical loop, who in your environment (e.g., parent, classroom teacher, counselor, trusted classmate) can prompt you to open your protocol board?
