Why This Matters

This lesson equips students with the knowledge to recognize, prevent, and address issues like harassment and unsafe practices, promoting a culture of safety and respect.

Instructional Sequence

1. Warm-Up: Spot the Safety Slip-Up
Display the Warm-Up activity on the board. Ask students to individually identify one safety slip-up they see in the image and explain why. Facilitate a brief class discussion on their observations.

2. Introduction to Workplace Safety
Use the Slide Deck to introduce workplace safety, WHS, and the 'YouMeUs' approach. Follow the script for definitions. Ask: "Why is it important to learn about safety now, even if you're not in a job yet?"

3. Understanding Harassment and Respect
Transition to workplace sexual harassment. Use the script for sensitive language. Present age-appropriate scenarios; students discuss in small groups if behavior is respectful or disrespectful and why.

4. Reporting and Support Systems
Discuss reporting importance. Explain ways to report (trusted adult, teacher, counselor). Reinforce that reporting is not "telling tales" but ensuring everyone's safety.

Warm-Up: Spot the Safety Slip-Up
"Good morning/afternoon, everyone! To get us started today, I have an image displayed on the board. I want you to take a moment, look closely, and see if you can spot any 'safety slip-ups' in the picture. Think about what might be unsafe or potentially cause harm."
Allow students 1–2 minutes to observe and think.
"Now, who can share one safety slip-up they noticed and tell us why it's a slip-up?"
Facilitate a brief discussion. Guide them to explain why something is unsafe (e.g., "a bag in the aisle is a trip hazard during an evacuation").
