Objective
Understand impact of words on school safety and trust.
The "Why"
This lesson emphasizes the importance of a safe school environment. It demonstrates that words have real-world effects and reinforces the concepts of respect and responsibility in school communication. For a Tier 3 intervention, the focus is on clarifying boundaries while maintaining a supportive relationship.
Preparation & Setup
Review Content: Familiarize yourself with the "Safety First Slides" to guide the discussion points.
Environment: Ensure a calm, distraction-free, and supportive space. This conversation should feel helpful, not punitive.
IEP Alignment: Review specific accommodations (visual aids, frequent checks for understanding, or processing time) and integrate them into the flow.
Visual Support: Have the "Safety First Slides" and "Kind Words Toolkit" ready to use.
Instructional Steps

Introduction & Context (5 mins)
Greet the student warmly; use simple, direct language.
Explain the purpose: "We're talking today about how to keep our school a happy and safe place for everyone."
Introduce boundaries: Some topics (like guns) make people feel worried or unsafe at school, even if they are okay at home or on TV.

Safety, Respect & Discussion (10 mins)
Visual Support: Use the slides to show the "Safety Shield."Discuss the impact of words: Words are tools. Some tools build things up (kindness), and some tools can break things (threats/gun talk).
Encourage questions: "What makes you feel safe at school?"
Validate feelings: Clarify misunderstandings gently. If the student mentions home experiences, acknowledge them but reiterate the school boundary.

Wrap-Up & Reflection (5 mins)
Summarize: "Our words help keep our friends feeling safe."
Check for understanding: "What is one topic we keep for 'home talk' instead of 'school talk'?"
Praise effort: Reassure the student they are supported and can always ask you questions.
