Reaction Reset: If-Then Coping Blueprints
Grade 6 • Social-Emotional Learning • 45-Minute Session
Target Skills
Self-Management & Decision Making
Instructional Purpose
Transitioning into 6th grade introduces heightened social evaluation, changing peer dynamics, and increased academic pressure. This lesson equips students with implementation intentions ("If [Trigger], Then [Coping Action]") to replace knee-jerk emotional reactions with pre-decided self-regulation scripts.
Key Objectives
Identify physical and situational triggers.
Differentiate reacting vs. responding.
Write 3 functional personal If-Then plans.
Materials Needed Prep time: 10 mins
Slides: Reaction Reset Deck
Student Handout (1 per student)
Pocket Reset Cards (cardstock)
45-Minute Pacing & Protocol (Phases 1 & 2)
1 Hook & Warm-Up: The Split Second Domino 00 - 08 min
Counselor Prompt: "Have you ever said or done something in a split second when mad or stressed, and 5 minutes later thought, 'Why did I do that?' "
• Engagement: Ask students to give a thumb rating (1 = never, 5 = weekly) for how often impulses sneak up on them.
• Core Teaching: In middle school, your emotional brain (amygdala) is fully accelerated, but your decision-making brakes (prefrontal cortex) are still under construction.
2 Direct Instruction: The If-Then Formula 08 - 20 min
Introduce the concept of Implementation Intentions (Dr. Peter Gollwitzer's psychological framework). When we decide our action beforehand, our brain doesn't have to scramble during stress.
The "IF" (The Specific Spark) Must be an observable cue: body signal (tight jaw, hot cheeks) or scenario (peer leaves me out, test handed out).
The "THEN" (The Micro-Action) Must be immediate, realistic, and silent/safe: 3 deep exhale breaths, drink water, palm press, or self-talk script.

Facilitation Protocol & Intervention Strategies
Grade 6 Lesson Protocol (Continued)
3 Guided Practice: Deconstructing 6th-Grade Stressors 20 - 30 min
Walk the class through 2 high-frequency scenarios using the slides before students work independently.
Scenario A (Academic Overwhelm): A math pop-quiz or long essay prompt appears on desk.
Formula: "IF I feel my stomach drop when looking at the test, THEN I will close my eyes, exhale for 4 seconds, and answer the easiest question first."
Scenario B (Social Friction): Friends whisper or change conversation when you walk up at lunch.
Formula: "IF I feel an urge to snap or storm off, THEN I will press my feet into the floor and say silently: 'I don't know the whole story yet.'"
4 Personal Plans 30 - 40 min
Distribute Reaction Reset Student Handout . Students independently draft three plans: Social, Academic, and Personal/Home.
Counselor circulates to ensure the "THEN" actions are within student control (avoiding "THEN everyone is nice to me").
5 Debrief & Pocket Cards 40 - 45 min
Pair-share one plan. Students cut out or tuck their Pocket Reset Cards into their student ID holder, locker, or binder pouch.
Closing mantra: "You can't always choose the IF, but you always own the THEN."
Common Student Misconceptions
"The THEN must change the other person": Remind them If-Thens are strictly about self-regulation, not controlling others.
"It means I can never get angry": Emphasize that all feelings are valid; the plan simply protects them from painful aftermaths.
Tier 2 Small Group Extensions
Role-Playing: Have pairs act out the "IF" trigger while their partner practices activating their "THEN" in real time.
Weekly Check-in Tracker: Follow up in individual or small-group sessions on whether the plan was tested and what adjustments are needed.
Success Criteria Checklist
1. Clear Trigger Trigger is specific and recognizable (e.g. "When I don't get picked").
2. Autonomous Action Action does not depend on someone else's compliance.
3. Immediate & Feasible Can be done right there in class, hallway, or cafeteria quietly.

How to Use "If-Then" Plans to Own Your Choices
Middle school throws unexpected curveballs every day. Learn the brain science trick that gives you superpower control over your reactions.
Pre-Decide Your Moves
Beat the Split-Second Trap
The Science of Stress
The Split-Second Trap
01 / 06
The Automatic Reaction
Trigger ➔ Explosion / Shutdown
Someone cuts in line, laughs at you, or hands back a bad grade. In less than 0.2 seconds, your alarm brain acts before your thinking brain can speak up.
Result: Drama, regret, detention, or hurt feelings.
The Prefrontal Pause
Trigger ➔ 3-Sec Pause ➔ Choice
When you pre-program your reaction with an If-Then Plan , your brain executes a smart decision automatically when pressure strikes.
Result: Calm control, dignity, and zero regrets.
You can't stop triggers from happening, but you can choose your programmed response.
Implementation Intentions
The Brain Hack: IF-THEN
02 / 06
Step 1: The Cue
IF...
A specific trigger occurs (body signal, social moment, or school stressor).
Step 2: The Script
THEN...
I will immediately do one pre-selected micro-action that keeps me in control.
Why it works: In calm moments, you choose the move. In heated moments, your brain just runs the script!
Rule: The "Then" must be 100% in your control.
Middle School Realities
Three High-Pressure Moments
03 / 06
Scenario 01
Lunch Table Drama
You approach your usual table, and someone says "Seats are saved" or looks away.
Plan: IF I feel embarrassed, THEN I will walk calmly to the open booth and smile.
Scenario 02
Test Freeze
The teacher says "Begin" and question #1 looks completely unfamiliar.
Plan: IF my mind goes blank, THEN I do 2 slow belly breaths and skip to question #2.
Scenario 03
Teased in Hallway
Someone makes a sarcastic joke about your shoes or clothes while passing.
Plan: IF my fists clench, THEN I unclench my hands, look straight ahead, and keep walking.

The Rule: You cannot control what happens around you, but you can pre-program your response. An If-Then Plan connects a specific trigger to an immediate, calm action.
Part 1: My Trigger Radar
Check off the warning signs and situations that most often set off your stress alarm:
Physical Warning Signals (Check top 2)
Clenched fists or tight jaw Racing heartbeat or heavy chest Face or ears feeling hot / flushed Stomach dropping or feeling sick Mind going completely blank
Middle School Situations (Check top 2)
Feeling left out at lunch or recess Called on in class when unprepared A friend whispering or ignoring texts Receiving a grade lower than expected Accused of something I didn't do
Part 2: Upgrading a Reaction
❌ The Automatic Reaction
Partner isn't doing their part of group project ➔ You yell, slam your Chromebook, and get a warning from teacher.
✅ The If-Then Upgrade
IF my partner refuses to do work, THEN I take 2 deep breaths and ask the teacher quietly how to divide tasks.
Part 3: Choose Your "THEN" Tactics
Circle 2 tactics you feel comfortable using in a real classroom or hallway:
Body Tools
4-second long exhale
Press feet flat on floor
Sip cold water
Mind Tools
"I can handle this."
Count backwards 5-4-3-2-1
"Will this matter tomorrow?"
Voice Tools
"Give me one minute."
Ask for bathroom break
Speak with calm tone

4. Hold (4s)
3. Exhale (4s)
• Drop: Let shoulders melt 2 inches away from ears.
• Ground: Press your heels firmly into the floor.
• Release: Unclench teeth and tongue from roof of mouth.
Nobody can see you doing this. It's totally private.
Card 3: Reality Anchor 5-4-3-2-1
When Brain Panics or Spirals
Silently identify these around the room to bring your prefrontal cortex back online:
5 Things you can see right now
4 Things you can physically touch
3 Sounds you can quietly hear
2 Things you can smell or taste
1 Slow, calm breath into your stomach
Brings your thinking brain back in 30 seconds.
Card 4: Shield Scripts SAFE VOICE
What to Say When Pressured
Keep these pre-approved phrases ready to avoid verbal regret:
When feeling attacked: "I'm not doing drama today. Talk to you later."
When rushed or cornered: "I need a couple minutes to think before I respond."
When overwhelmed in class: "Can I step out for 30 seconds for a quick sip of water?"
A quiet pause is always stronger than an angry shout.
