Approach
Interactive Discussion & Scenario Analysis
The "Why"
"Developing the ability to respond intentionally rather than react impulsively is a crucial life skill. It empowers students to navigate difficult emotions, build stronger relationships, and make choices that align with their values, leading to greater personal well-being and success."
Objectives
Differentiate between impulsive reactions and intentional responses.
Identify personal emotional triggers.
Apply the "Pause and Plan" strategy to challenging situations.
Preparation
• Review the Reaction Architects Slide Deck .
• Print and cut out the Pause and Plan Activity Cards .
• Make copies of the Responding with Intention Worksheet for each student.
• Ensure whiteboard or projector is ready for use.
Blueprint for Delivery
10 MIN
Warm-Up: Instant or Intentional?
Begin by asking: "Have you ever done something without thinking, and then wished you could take it back?" Allow for a few brief shares.
Introduce the idea of reactions vs. responses . Explain that a reaction is instant and emotional, while a response is thoughtful and intentional.
Ask students for examples of both. Facilitate a brief discussion to clarify.
15 MIN
Understanding Our Triggers
Use the Reaction Architects Slide Deck to introduce the concept of "triggers" (anything that sets off a strong emotional reaction).
Discuss how triggers lead to automatic reactions if we don't recognize them first.
Show examples of different scenarios and ask students to identify if the action shown is a reaction or a response.
Emphasize that responses consistently lead to better outcomes.
20 MIN
The Pause and Plan Strategy
Introduce the P-A-U-S-E acronym via the slide deck:
P: Pause
A: Ask
U: Understand
S: Select
E: Execute
Model the strategy with a scenario: Someone laughs when you trip in the hallway. Compare the reaction (yelling) vs. the PAUSE response .
Distribute the Pause and Plan Activity Cards . Divide students into small groups to apply the strategy to their assigned scenario.
15 MIN
Drafting Your Intentions
Have groups share their "Planned Responses" with the class.
Distribute the Responding with Intention Worksheet .
Students work individually to identify their own common triggers and draft a "Pause and Plan" for a potential future challenge.
Conclude by having students complete the "Intention Statement" at the bottom of the worksheet.

What Are Our Triggers?
Architect's Definition
A trigger is anything that sets off a strong emotional reaction in us.
A specific word or phrase
A difficult situation
A certain person
A physical feeling
Triggers often lead to immediate reactions if we don't recognize them first.

PHASE 01: STABILIZATION
P IS FOR PAUSE
When you feel that immediate urge to react:
STOP!
Take a deep breath.
Count to five.
The Space Between
TRIGGER
PAUSE
ACTION
Create a small space between the trigger and your action.
PHASE 02: INSPECTION
A is for Ask
Situation
What is really going on? Is it as bad as it seems?
Emotions
How am I feeling? Angry? Sad? Embarrassed?
Goal
What do I want to happen? What's my goal?
PHASE 03: CONTEXT
U IS FOR
UNDERSTAND
Perspective-taking is the blueprint for empathy.
What might the other person be thinking or feeling?
Is there more to this situation than meets the eye?
How might my reaction impact others?

Phase 02: Structural Analysis
Instructions for Groups:
Read your assigned scenario carefully.
Identify the Trigger in the situation.
Use the "Pause and Plan" strategy to discuss how you would respond with intention.
Draft your final response in the space provided.
Be prepared to present your "architectural response" to the class.

Analysis: My Triggers and Reactions
1. Think about a time recently when you had an immediate, strong reaction. What happened?
2. What was your reaction? (e.g., I yelled, I walked away, I felt my face get hot, etc.)
3. What was the TRIGGER? (What specific thing set off your reaction?)
4. How did your reaction make you feel afterward? How did it affect others?
02
Schematic: Practicing "Pause and Plan"
Scenario: Describe a challenging situation you MIGHT encounter soon.
P
Pause: How will you create a moment of space before you act?
A
Ask: What questions will you ask yourself in that moment?
U
Understand: What might be another person's perspective?
S
Select: What is the most intentional choice you could make?
E
Execute: How will you calmly carry out your chosen response?
03
Final Specification: My Intention Statement
