Adult Facilitation & Trauma-Informed Tips
The "Power-Up" Concept
For a child with a history of trauma, traditional "time-outs" can feel like abandonment. The Power-Up Station frames the space as a necessary, non-punitive tool for self-regulation—a place to "recharge" when big feelings take over.
How to use the space:
1
Identify Early: Say: "It looks like your power levels are getting low. Let's go to the Power-Up Station to recharge."
2
Co-Regulate: Stay nearby. Proximity equals safety for trauma-impacted kids.
3
Visual Choices: Use the Recharge Menu . Options include deep pressure (Wall Pushes), sensory grounding (Sensory Bin, Ice Cube in mouth), or cognitive focus (10-0 Countdown).
4
Check-In: Once calm, celebrate the "recharge." Use the Status Meter to check if they are back to 100%.
Key Phrases:
• "I'm going to stay right here while you find your calm."
• "Let's count down from 10 to 0 together like a rocket."
• "Notice how the hidden hero toy feels in the sensory bin."
• "That ice cube is cold! I see your power coming back."
Safety First: Supervision required for mouth-based sensory activities. Prioritize physical safety above all.

Grounding & Sensory Regulation
Why use a Sensory Bin?
Sensory play provides immediate physical input that can help pull a child out of a "fight or flight" response. It encourages grounding and provides a focused task that calms the nervous system through tactile feedback.
Hero Bin Setup Ideas:
The Base
• Dry Rice (can dye it blue!)
• Dried Beans or Lentils
• Kinetic Sand
• Ice Cubes (for cold sensory)
Hidden Treasures
• Small Hero Figurines
• Plastic "Power Gems"
• Smooth river stones
• Measuring cups/scoops
Recharge Activities:
A
The Hero Search: Bury 5 small figures and ask him to find them all with his eyes closed (tactile focus).
B
The Power Pour: Slowly pour rice or beans over his hands. Focus on the sound and feel.
C
Secret Vault: Use hero hands to "bury" the big feelings deep inside the bin.
Hero Support Tip:
Keep the bin covered when not in use. The "Specialness" of the bin makes it a more effective tool when he is struggling to regulate.
