The Law of the Forest: LIKING vs. COEXISTING
It is natural to not get along with everyone. Bear cubs and other animals in the forest don't all play together, but they share the same land, food, rivers and trees in peace.
Goal Shift
🚫
Old Mindset
"I want them out of here!"
✅
My New Focus
"I am protecting my own calm mind and body, and focusing on my own space."
My thoughts belong to me, not them.
Neutral Mindset Shifts
When a peer's actions feel annoying or dysregulating, default to a neutral explanation. It’s not about you!
Hostile: "He is doing that to annoy me!"
Neutral Cub: "He is just noisy and loud."
Animals Share the Forest
🐻
Cub: The Quiet Reader
Wants a quiet space to learn, play and build.
🦅
Eagle: The Active Flyer
Swoops, makes high-pitched whistles and chirps, and moves quickly around.
🐾Coexisting in the Forest
🧸🧸🦅
The Giant Tree Sharing one tree, sitting on opposite branches.
🧸🧸🦅
The River Bank Drinking from the same stream, giving personal space.
🌲 Both animals share the same safe forest. They do not need to fly or walk together to succeed! 🌲
Silent Mindset Scripts (The Quiet Roar)
When you feel a "reaction wave" starting in your chest, choose one script to repeat silently in your head:
💬
"I don't have to control them; I only control my reaction and behavior."
💬
"My calm mind and body are mine to protect. This distraction is temporary."
Silent Grounding Prompt: If the noise gets too close, use your pocket cards to ground your senses.
My Pocket Peace Cards
Cut out these four cards. Carry them in your pocket or tape them to your desk for silent help.
CUT-OUT CARDS

👣
Paws on the Earth
Press both feet flat and hard into the floor. Feel the strong solid ground under you.
🎒
Pocket Squeeze
Put one hand in your pocket. Firmly squeeze a fidget or press your fingers together.

Two quick inhales through your nose, then one long slow sigh out through your mouth.
Inhale 👃 + Inhale 👃 Exhaaaale 💨

"Focus on My Goals"
"My school goals are too important to get distracted. Keep going."
"This is Temporary"
"This class will end, this day will pass. I can ride this wave."

Peaceful Coexistence Teacher Guide
Educator Facilitation Resource
Peaceful Coexistence Teacher Guide
Target: Grades 1–6 Intervention
Format: 1-on-1 Prep & Guide
Clinical-Pedagogical Goal
Help students experiencing relational peer conflict shift from active resentment to peaceful tolerance. By validating that liking everyone is not required, we remove the pressure of friendship and reframe the goal purely as protecting personal focus and emotional energy.
Intervention Delivery Plan
1
Validate and Reframe (5 Minutes)
Sit down with the student. Point to the My Peace Mat. Say: "It is completely okay if you do not like [Student]. You do not have to be friends. In the forest, different bear cubs can live peacefully in the same woods without sharing the same log."
2
Tackle Hostile Attribution Bias (5 Minutes)
Discuss "Neutral Bear thoughts." Discuss how our brains trick us into thinking people do things just to irritate us. Model: "Instead of thinking 'He is tapping his pencil to bug me,' try thinking 'He is just noisy because he is distracted.' It's not about you."
3
Practice the Grounding Cards (5 Minutes)
Review the 4 pocket cards. Practice doing a Physiological Sigh (two rapid nose inhales, slow mouth exhale). Practice Feet Grounding silently: "Let's see if we can both ground our feet silently for 10 seconds without making a sound."
4
Set Up Classroom Desk Anchors (2 Minutes)
Help the student place their My Peace Mat (e.g., corner of desk or inside folder) and keep the cut-out pocket cards handy. Agree on a discreet nod or signal you can use to remind them to use their cards.
💡 Teacher Guidance & Trouble-Shooting
If the student says: "But they are still annoying!"
Respond: "You are right. It is hard when someone is noisy. But reacting takes your energy away. We do this to keep YOU strong, not to let them win."
Discreet Progress Monitoring
Avoid asking "How are you doing with [Peer]?" in front of others. Touch your pocket as a visual cue, or leave a tiny paw-print note 🐾 to remind them to ground.
Verbal Roleplay Script
Roleplaying Neutral Mindset Shifts:
Teacher: "If [Student] starts tapping their chair, what is a hostile thought your brain whispers?"
Student: "He's trying to ruin my concentration on purpose!"
Peaceful Bear Grounding Pocket Cards
