Feeling Faces Teaching Script LESSON GUIDELINE: 30-MINUTE SEL
Kindergarten SEL
Meet the Feeling Faces
Teacher Instruction Script & Pacing Guide
Learning Objective:
Students will correctly identify and name four basic emotions (happy, sad, mad, scared) when shown facial and body cues.
Cohesive Materials Needed:
Faces & Feelings Slides, Feeling Faces Playbook, Emotion Charades Cards, Color the Feeling Worksheet, Mood Meter Check-In.
Step 1: Warm-Up Check-In
⏰ 0 - 5 Minutes
Gather students in a circle. Introduce the Mood Meter Check-In . Point to each quadrant and read the basic emotions.
🎤 Say: "Good morning, feeling detectives! Look around our circle. Our faces tell stories about how we feel inside. I'm feeling HAPPY today! Can we all make a big happy smile together? Let's trace it in the air!"
Step 2: Interactive Modeling
⏰ 5 - 15 Minutes
Project the Faces & Feelings Slides . Go slide by slide (Happy, Sad, Mad, Scared). Highlight the facial and body language clues.
💡 Direct Teaching Script Cues:
HAPPY (Slide 2): "Look at Slide 2. See that mouth curved up? That's our first clue. Show me your crinkled happy eyes! Our bodies feel light and bouncy!"
SAD (Slide 3): "Now look at Sad. The mouth corners drop down. Our body feels heavy, almost like we are carrying a heavy sack of sand. Let's take a slow sigh."
MAD (Slide 4): "Look at those folded arms and squeezed fists. Eyebrows point down like a 'V'. Let's squeeze our fists super tight, then release them to relax!"
SCARED (Slide 5): "Our eyes grow super big and round! Our mouth makes an 'O' shape. It is perfectly okay to feel scared sometimes. We are safe together."

Practice & Reflection
Step 3: Guided practice (Charades)
⏰ 15 - 22 Minutes
Pull cards from the Emotion Charades Cards . Invite individual student volunteers to act out physical cues. Encourage class guessing.
🎤 Say: "I'm picking a card! Look at my actor... No speaking! Look at their hands—are they squeezed in fists? No? Ah, they are covering their heart and their eyes are huge! What feeling is that? Scared! Yes, you got it!"
Step 4: Independent Worksheet
