Math Anxiety Busters Lesson Plan
Math Anxiety Busters
Facilitator's Lesson Guide
Time: 30 Minutes
Grade: 7th Grade
Objective
Students will practice 7th-grade math concepts while simultaneously learning and implementing mindfulness and relaxation techniques. The goal is to decrease math-related stress and foster a safe, positive learning environment through game-based activity.
The "Why"
Math anxiety can create a mental block that prevents students from accessing their true mathematical potential. By pairing "stressful" stimuli (math problems) with "calming" stimuli (mindfulness), we help rewire the brain's stress response to the subject.
Materials Needed
- Anxiety Busters Cards (Printed)
- Math Problem Cards (Printed)
- Stopwatch / Timer
- Index cards & Markers
Lesson Timeline
5
Introduction: Clearing the Air
5 Minutes
- Start by welcoming the students and briefly discussing how anxiety can affect learning, especially in math.
- Explain the purpose of the lesson: to combine math practice with fun activities to reduce anxiety.
- Key Message: Ensure students understand they are in a safe, supportive environment where "wrong" answers are just steps toward "right" ones.
20
Activity: Math & Mindfulness Relay
20 Minutes
The Rules:
- Divide the class into small groups of 4-5 students.
- Assign each group a stack of Math Problem cards and Anxiety Buster cards.
- One student picks a Math Problem card and solves it on the group's whiteboard or paper.
- The same student must then pick an Anxiety Buster card and perform the task (e.g., deep breathing, stretching) before passing the turn to the next person.
- The goal is to complete the stack, but the focus is on the reset between problems.
"Encourage students to cheer each other on. The energy should be high but the 'resets' should be calm."
5
Closure & Reflection
5 Minutes
- Reconvene as a whole class for a "Decompression Discussion."
- Ask: "How did it feel to do a breathing exercise immediately after a math problem?"
- Ask: "Did your focus change during the activity?"
- Final Reminder: These techniques (breathing, stretching) are portable. They can be used during a test, a quiz, or when doing homework.
Teacher Pro-Tip
If you notice a student getting particularly frustrated with a math card, step in and suggest they do two Anxiety Buster cards. Make the "break" the reward for effort, not just completion.
Differentiation
For Advanced Learners: Use the "2x+3=7" style problems and ask them to invent a scenario for the variable.
For Emerging Learners: Focus on the area and perimeter problems with visual sketches.
Anxiety Busters Cards Worksheet
Anxiety Busters: Printable Cards
Instructional mindfulness activities for students.
Preparation
- Print this page on heavy cardstock if possible.
- Cut along the dashed lines to create individual cards.
- Laminate for durability (optional).
In the Classroom
During the "Math Anxiety Busters" relay, students draw one of these cards after solving a math problem. They must perform the action before tagging their next teammate.

Math Problems: Relay Cards
Core math challenges for the relay activity.
Preparation
- Print on cardstock and cut into individual cards.
- Each group should have one full set of these cards.
- Provide scrap paper or small whiteboards for solving.
Facilitation
Students must show their work or explain their answer to their teammates before moving to the "Anxiety Buster" phase of their turn.
