Phase 1: The Illusion Hook (10 Mins)
Begin with a psychological challenge. Ask students to write down exactly what the front of a common penny looks like without looking. Collect attempts or discuss.
Key Concept: Recognition vs. Recall
We look at pennies thousands of times, yet cannot draw them accurately. Passive exposure does not equal memory. Rereading notes works exactly like looking at a penny—it breeds overconfidence without retention.
Phase 2: Metacognitive Calibration (15 Mins)
Introduce Metacognition as the "Brain Executive." Use the slides to explain that the brain has two modes: the Operator (doing tasks) and the Monitor (checking how well they are being done).

You have seen a penny thousands of times. You know what it is.
But can you draw it perfectly from memory right now? Probably not. Why?
RECOGNITION ≠ RECALL
Your brain recognizes the object easily, but recognition requires almost zero neurological work. Actual remembering requires active recall.
*Lesson: Re-reading notes is just looking at the penny. It feels like learning, but it is an illusion.
