Kindness & Social Connection
Part 1
Introduction & Video (8 Min)
Teacher Says:
"Good morning/afternoon everyone! To kick things off today, I have a short video I want to share with you. I want you to simply watch and notice what you see, and how it makes you feel."
[Play Video on Slide 1: viral kindness chain/pay-it-forward scenario]
Follow-Up Questions:
"Alright, what did you observe in that video? What was happening?" (Pause for responses)
"How did watching those acts of kindness make you feel? Did anyone feel a specific emotion?" (Pause for responses)
"Has anyone here ever experienced or witnessed something similar, where one act of kindness seemed to spread?" (Pause for responses)
Part 2
The Ripple & Helper's High (7 Min)
[Advance to Slide 2: What's a Ripple Effect?]
Teacher Says:
"Great observations! What we saw in that video is a perfect example of something we call the 'ripple effect.' Think about when you drop a stone into a still pond. What happens? Exactly! Those ripples spread out, getting bigger and bigger. Kindness works the same way."
[Advance to Slide 3: The Helper's High]
"Now, here's something really cool. Did you know that when you do something kind, it doesn't just make THEM feel good, it actually makes YOU feel good too? Scientists call this the 'helper's high.' Our brains release chemicals like endorphins and oxytocin—natural mood boosters! It's a total win-win."
Part 3
Commit to Kindness (10 Min)
[Advance to Slide 4: Your Kindness Challenge!]
Teacher Says:
"Today, we're going to create our own ripples. Your challenge for this week is to commit to ONE act of kindness. It doesn't have to be huge; even small acts create big ripples!"
"Let's brainstorm. What are some simple, realistic acts of kindness you could do for a friend, a teacher, a family member, or someone in our wider community?"
[Encourage brainstorming. Hand out Kindness Tickets. Circulate and assist.]
Part 4
Seal & Wrap-Up (5 Min)
[Advance to Slide 5: Make Your Commitment]
Teacher Says:
"Wonderful! Now, fold your ticket, place it inside your envelope, and seal it. Write your name on the outside. I'll collect these and return them next week so we can talk about how it went."
[Advance to Slide 6: Conclusion]
"To wrap up, remember: every single one of you has the power to create a positive ripple. Your small act this week can brighten someone's day. What kind of ripple will YOU create?"
Handling Challenges
Silent Group? Ask for a show of hands: "Raise your hand if you've ever felt better after helping someone."
Unrealistic Ideas? Guide them: "That's a huge goal! What's a smaller version of that you could do today?"
