Circle Time Guide
Setting the tone with connection, movement, and joy
Kindergarten
Keep it Short
Max 15-20 minutes total. Keep transitions snappy!
Over-Exaggerate
Use big expressions, silly voices, and clear hand signs.
Reset Signal
"Hands on top, that means stop!" with hands on heads.
1 The Gathering Song (5 min)
Transition Hook
Sing this song to the tune of "The Farmer in the Dell" to gather students onto the rug. Model sitting with criss-cross legs and hands in laps.
"We gather on the rug, We gather on the rug,"
"With big bright smiles and cozy spots, We gather on the rug!"
"Our hands are in our laps, Our hands are in our laps,"
"We're ready now to start our day, our hands are in our laps!"
Tip: Repeat 2-3 times, starting loud and getting progressively softer until you are whispering. Kindergartners will naturally mimic your volume!
2 Hickety Pickety Bumblebee (10 min)
High Engagement
A classic, rhythmic name-learning game. Use a soft, plush bumblebee toy or puppet. Pass it to a child, lead the chant, and have the class echo.
The Chant (Teacher & Class):
"Hickety pickety bumblebee,"
"Who can say their name for me?"
The Student responds:
"SOPHIA!" (whispers or shouts)
The Three-Step Echo:
- Say it: Everyone repeats the name normally: "SOPHIA!"
- Whisper it: Everyone whispers the name: "Sophia..."
- Clap it: Clap the syllables together: "SO-PHI-A!" (3 claps)
Facilitation: Ensure every single child gets a turn. Keep a steady, clapping beat throughout to maintain momentum and physical engagement.

3 The "Wiggle & Freeze" Song (8 min)
Brain Break
Kindergartners need to move their bodies frequently. Use this interactive singing game to practice both high energy and absolute stillness (self-regulation).
Sing to the tune of "London Bridge is Falling Down":
"Wiggle your fingers, wiggle your toes, wiggle your shoulders, wiggle your nose!"
"Wiggle them high and wiggle them low... now we freeze... like ice or snow!"
Active Prompt Sequences:
- Round 1: Wiggle (fingers, toes, shoulders, nose) โ Freeze!
- Round 2: Jump up and down (slowly, quickly, super-fast) โ Freeze!
- Round 3: Swim like a fish (quietly, splashy, sleepy) โ Freeze!
Praise Focus: Draw immediate attention to students who freeze perfectly: "Look at Leo! He is as still as a statue! Wow!" This builds positive reinforcement.
4 The High-Five Farewell (7 min)
Social-Emotional
Close your circle time with a structured, comforting ritual that ensures every student leaves the circle feeling celebrated and safe.
The "I Had Fun" Sparkle:
Pass around a plush heart or smiley face ball. When a student receives it, they can complete the sentence frame:
"Today was fun because I got to ________!"
Provide choices for them: "play with toys", "meet friends", "sing a song", or "draw". Allow passes if they are shy.
The Final High-Five Line:
As you release students to their next table activity or recess, stand at the door/exit of the rug and give each a gentle high-five, saying: "I'm so glad you are in our class!"
Troubleshooting: What to do if...
A child is crying/homesick:
Do not force participation. Give them a special plush toy or allow them to watch from a safe "cozy corner" with visibility of the rug.
The group gets wild and loud:
Do not try to shout over them. Lower your voice to a complete whisper, turn off the classroom lights, or play a single slow chime.
