Internal Signals Counselor Guide Internal Signals
SESSION TYPE: LOW-PRESSURE / NON-VERBAL / 30 MIN
Tactical Counselor Guide
The Strategy: "Side-by-Side" Focus
For a guarded 10th grader, eye contact and direct questioning often feel like an interrogation. This session is designed to be side-by-side . You aren't looking at them; you are both looking at the paper. This reduces the "threat" of the interaction.
Tone Check
Keep your voice neutral and "matter-of-fact." Avoid the "Counselor Voice" (overly soft or empathetic), which can feel patronizing to guarded teens.
The Goal
Not to "fix" them in 30 minutes, but to give them a way to signal "I'm overwhelmed" before they shut down or escalate.
Session Timeline (30 Minutes)
0-5 MIN
The Opening
"Hey, I know these sessions can feel like a lot of talking. I want to try something different today that's more about mapping out how your brain handles 'noise' vs. 'signals.' No big 'how do you feel' questions."
5-20 MIN
The Activity
Hand them the "Signal Scrambler" Worksheet . Complete your own copy at the same time. This makes it a shared task rather than a test. Focus on the "Input" (triggers) and "Interference" (physical feelings).
20-25 MIN
Communication Tool
Introduce the "Silent Signals" Cards . Explain: "Sometimes when people redirect you or give you feedback, it feels like an attack. These cards let you tell people what's happening without having to find the words when you're already mad."
25-30 MIN
The Exit
Quick check-out. "Which of these feels the most 'real' to you?" Let them keep the cards. No pressure to commit to using them yet.
When they shut down...
"Looks like the signal is jammed right now. That's okay. We can just sit with the map for a second."
When they escalate...
"I'm backing off. I can see the 'Scrambler' is at 100% right now. I'll be here when the noise drops."
Validating isolation...
"Feeling isolated is usually the brain's way of trying to protect itself from more interference."

Date
01. Input interference (Triggers)
Identify what "jams" your focus or causes frustration. Mark the ones that feel loudest.
Public Redirection (Corrected in front of others)
Unclear Expectations (What do you even want?)
Feeling Micromanaged (Let me do it myself)
Being Interrupted (I wasn't finished)
Loud/Chaotic Environments
Other Interference Sources:
02. Signal distortion (The Feeling)
When the "noise" gets high, how does your internal system react? (Check all that apply)
Chest Tight
Brain Fog
Hot Face
Tunnel Vision
Leg Shaking
Dead Silence
Current Status Map: Shade in the "Distortion" areas
Alert Baseline
03. Recovery Protocol (Coping)
When the system is overloaded, what reboot method works best? Pick 2 and describe how they look.
Protocol A: Tactical Pause (Leave room)
Protocol B: Signal Shift (Music/Earbuds)
Protocol C: Manual Reset (Physical task)
My Preferred Protocols:
Internal Signals Cards Silent Signals
Non-Verbal Communication Cards // Pocket Edition
Deployment Instructions:
Cut out these cards. When you feel "interference" or "signal jamming" (frustration, anxiety, anger), you can place a card on your desk or hand it to a teacher/counselor instead of having to find words right away.
System Overload
Signal is jammed. Need 5 minutes of silence.

Redirection Limit
I'm feeling cornered. Backing off for a bit.

I'm trying to reboot. I just need space to do it.

Tactical Guide: Zero-Prep Folding Strategy
Why this works for guarded students:
A blank sheet of paper can be intimidating or feel like a trap. By **folding** it, you create boundaries and structure. This "Side-by-Side" activity allows the student to focus on the paper's physical shape rather than your eye contact.
The 4-Fold Process
1
The Prep
Give them a blank sheet and take one for yourself. Fold yours in half, then half again. Ask them to mimic you. You now have 4 quadrants.
2
Box 1: "The Hardware"
"In this top-left box, draw or list the 'Hardware'—the physical stuff in the room where you felt the most stress today (desks, lights, specific person)."
Goal: Grounding in the physical environment.
3
Box 2: "The Jammer"
"Top-right. What 'jammed' your signal? Was it a comment, a look, or a specific rule?"
Goal: Identifying the specific trigger.
4
Box 3: "Internal Temp"
"Bottom-left. When that happened, what was the internal temperature? (1 = Cool/Calm, 10 = Melting Down). Write the number big."
Goal: Self-assessment of intensity.
5
Box 4: "Manual Override"
"Bottom-right. If we could hit a 'Manual Override' button right now to drop that temp by just 2 points, what would that button do? (Music, leave room, draw, etc.)"

Counselor Pro-Tip: Draw and write in your own boxes while they do theirs. It makes the silence feel productive rather than awkward.

Facilitation Note: If they aren't frustrated today...
If the student is calm, this isn't a "fix-it" activity—it's "System Training." Use it to build the map *before* the next signal jam happens. Say: "Since things are quiet today, let's map out how the system usually breaks down so we're ready for next time."
The 4-Fold Process
1
Box 1: The Hardware
Active: "What's in the room right now that's making this hard?"
Proactive: "Where in the school do you feel the 'signal' is clearest? (Safe space, specific class)."
2
Box 2: The Jammer
Active: "What exactly just tripped the alarm?"
Proactive: "Think about the last time you felt a 'shutdown' coming on. What was the specific input/trigger?"
3
Box 3: System Status
Active: "Where is your 'Temp' right now? (1-10)."
Proactive: "When you get redirected, how fast does your signal go from 1 to 10? (Instant vs. slow build)."
4
Box 4: Override Plan
Active: "What's one thing we can do *right now*?"
Proactive: "Which 'Silent Signal' card should we try using first next time the signal gets fuzzy?"
Opening Lines for a "Calm" Day
"I don't know where your head is at today, so let's just do a quick 'System Audit' to see how things are running."
"Since the signal is clear today, it's the perfect time to map out the 'dead zones' in the building where things get loud."

Counselor Pro-Tip: If they say "I don't know" or "I'm fine," use your own paper to map *your* day. "Well, for me, my signal got jammed this morning when my coffee spilled. My Hardware was the breakroom..." This models the behavior without pressure.
