Identity Blueprint: 5th Grade Focus
20 Minutes
The Approach
For 5th graders, the focus is on **agency** and **differentiation**. At this age, students often feel their reputation is "who they are" permanently. This conversation helps them realize their reputation is just a "building" they've constructed—and they have the tools to remodel it at any time. Focus heavily on the link between daily habits and the "Famous for..." section.
Conversation Phases
0-5 min
Internal vs. External (The Gap)
Help the student identify that their "Famous for..." reputation might be masking who they really want to be.
Probing Questions:
"If I asked your teacher what you're 'famous' for in class, what would they say? Is that what you *want* to be your brand?"
"When you think of your 'Best Self'—the one that's proud and successful—how is that person different from the one we see in [Specific Subject]?"
5-15 min
Habits & Self-Control (The Work)
This is the heart of the behavior change. Pivot from "being a bad kid" to "having a weak habit" that needs strengthening.
Probing Questions:
"When you feel [Specific Trigger], what's your go-to move? Does that move help or hurt your 'Best Self'?"
"Look at the Self-Control tools on the page. Which one is your 'Power Tool'? Which one is broken right now?"
"If your grades don't match your ability, what 'construction site' habit is getting in the way (talking, not finishing, distractions)?"
15-20 min
The Build Plan (Commitment)
Make the commitment hyper-specific. Avoid "I'll try harder." Push for "I will raise my hand instead of calling out."
Probing Questions:
"If I come into your room next Tuesday, what exactly will I see you doing differently?"
"Who can be your 'Foreman'—someone you trust to give you a secret signal when you're getting off track?"
Growth Mindset Pivot
"It's not that you ARE loud/lazy/distracted—it's that you've been practicing those habits. We're going to start practicing a different habit today."
Success Metric
The student identifies a physical 'Support'—not just a person, but a specific seat change, a checklist, or a visual reminder.
