Seed To Sprouts Teacher Guide
Unit: First Week SEL
Seed to Sprouts
First Grade Lesson Guide • Based on "The Bad Seed" by Jory John
Lenny's SEL Series
Duration: 45-60 Mins
NYS Reading Standard
1R4: Feelings Vocabulary
Identify words and phrases in the story that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses (e.g., mad, sad, happy, lonely, bad, good).
NYS SEL Benchmark
Self-Management & Decision-Making
Students realize that past behaviors/mistakes ("being bad") do not lock them in. They can choose to grow and make "good seed" choices from now on.
Core Objective
Students will connect physical feelings words from the story with the characters' emotions, and demonstrate that they have control over their actions by designing a personal "Good Choice Seed."
Required Materials Checklist
- Jory John's book "The Bad Seed"
- Giant Anchor Chart (with seed outline)
- Green construction paper (for sprouts)
- Scissors, glue, crayons/markers
- Student "Good Choice Seed" Craft Worksheets
- Visual Vocabulary Anchor Cards
1 Interactive Read-Aloud & Vocabulary (15-20 Mins)
📖 Focus on Feelings Vocabulary (NYS 1R4) Pages 1-10
Prompts: Point out how the Bad Seed looks in the illustrations. Ask: "What words does the seed use to describe himself? How do you think he feels on the inside when people call him 'bad'?" Focus on words like mad, sad, and lonely.
🌱 The Turning Point (SEL Choice Point) Pages 11-20
Prompts: Read the section where the seed remembers his old home before the big scare. Ask: "How did he feel then? When things went wrong, did that mean he was stuck being 'bad' forever? What did he decide to do?" Highlight: "I made a choice."
🌾 Sprouting Good Choices Ending
Prompts: Look at the happy endings page. Ask: "Is the seed completely perfect now? No, but what is different? He is making better choices! What feelings words are we noticing here?" Focus on: happy, friendly, peaceful.

2 Interactive Anchor Chart: Two Sides of a Seed
Create a anchor chart on chart paper divided into two columns: "The Tough Shell" (Bad Seed behavior/feelings) and "The Fresh Sprout" (Good Choice Seed behavior/feelings). Use this transition to show students that behaviors are choices, not our identity.
The Tough Shell
Acting out when feeling hurt/lonely.
- Never saying please or thank you
- Cutting lines or interrupting
- Keeping anger inside (not talking)
The Fresh Sprout
Choosing empathy and cooperation.
- Saying "thank you" & helping friends
- Waiting patienty for our turn
- Apologizing when we make a mistake
3 Student Craft & Sorting Worksheet Facilitation
Phase A: Seed Choices Sorting (Page 1 of Student Sheets):
Students complete the card sorting activity. They identify which choices hurt the seed's sprout (the "tough shell") and which help the seed grow (the "fresh sprout"). Teachers should model the first choice together on the board.
Phase B: The Good Choice Seed Craft (Page 2 of Student Sheets):
Students color their physical "Choice Seed." In the blank writing section, they complete the sentence stem: "I can sprout by..." with one real good choice they will practice this week (e.g. sharing toys, listening to instructions, being quiet during read-alouds). Students then cut out their seed, paste the green paper sprout on top, and place it on the class bulletin board!
Teacher Tips & Differentiation
Differentiation Suggestions
- Support: Provide sentence stem tracing options or let struggling writers draw their good choice inside the seed instead.
- Extension: Challenge students to list how their choices affect their friends' feelings (connecting with standard 1R4).
Common Misconceptions
- First graders may think making a "bad choice" makes them a "bad kid." Reiterate: We all make bad choices sometimes, but we can always choose to sprout something new!
Post-Activity Reflection Prompts
At the end of the lesson, sit in a circle and ask: "Who can share one choice they made today that helped them sprout? How did that choice make our classroom community feel?"
