A 30-minute social-emotional learning lesson for 2nd grade where students discover generosity, establish a collective class kindness goal of 50 notes, craft heartfelt notes, and launch a weeklong generosity jar initiative.
Reflect Feelings: The "Warm Heart" Check-In (20–25 Min)
5 Minutes
Teacher Action: Direct students to their Kind Feelings Log worksheet.
Say (Scripted Dialogue):
"Put a hand over your heart. Notice how you feel right now after writing something kind to your classmate. Does your chest feel warm? Do you feel proud or cheerful? Scientists have found that when we give kindness, our brains release happy chemicals! In your Kind Feelings Log, circle your feeling badge and draw your moment of generosity."
Discussion Prompt: "Who can share: Why is giving kindness just as good as receiving it?"
Step 5
Celebrate Success & Take the Pledge (25–30 Min)
5 Minutes
Say (Scripted Dialogue):
"Look at our Celebration Menu on your Jar Goal Guide. When we hit 50 notes on Friday, our reward will be unlocked! Let's read our Generosity Pledge together with one strong voice: 'I promise to look for the good in others and fill our jar with kind words!' Now, sign your name on your pledge line!"
Encourage a "Secret Detective" game on Wednesday: draw student sticks or prompt students to spot someone outside their typical recess circle doing something helpful.
Writing & Spelling Supports:
Provide a word bank on the white board (e.g., caring, brave, helpful, creative, generous). Allow emerging writers to dictate a sentence or draw a detailed kindness picture.
