Critical Goal Reflection (Structured Choice)
Choice 1: Select exactly ONE question to answer (Check one):
Prompt A Prompt B
Prompt A: Why is identifying obstacles in advance a more effective strategy than waiting for them to happen?
Prompt B: Recall a past goal that was derailed. What was the obstacle, and how would an "If-Then" solution have changed the outcome?
Choice 2: Select exactly ONE question to answer (Check one):
Prompt C Prompt D
Prompt C: Why might your start of exams study goal matter to your peer community and general classroom atmosphere?
Prompt D: How does choosing wellness habits (e.g., sleep) support your capability to achieve academic goals under high pressure?

Choice 3: Select exactly ONE question to answer (Check one):
Prompt E Prompt F
Prompt E: Why might your next September plan require different supports and habits than your short-term start of exams targets?
Prompt F: How will the defensive habits and "If-Then" strategies you design today help prepare you for the post-secondary transition?
Evaluation Rubric
Criteria Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Level 4 SMART goals Goals are missing major parameters. General steps but lacks deadlines/metrics. All elements of SMART are deconstructed. Actionable timeline and highly specific metrics. Defensive Planning Obstacles or solutions are completely omitted. Identifies only 1 obstacle per goal, or solutions are vague and reactive. Identifies 2 clear obstacles for each goal with actionable "If-Then" solutions. Anticipates deep underlying obstacles (stress, fatigue) with highly creative proactive strategies. Reflection Quality Simple, missing "why" context. Identifies some barriers but lacks solutions. Thoughtfully explains chosen prompt and personal roadblocks. Demonstrates deep, mature foresight and proactive strategies. In-Class Work Habits Rarely participates or collaborates during feedback cycles. Requires prompts to stay on task; minimal peer collaboration. Stays focused on goal drafting and collaborates constructively. Highly self-regulated; leads peers with focus, insight, and critiques.
Commitment Agreement
I verify that these goals are SMART and that I will execute them.

Phase 1: Goal Mapping
The Multi-Horizon Strategy
We divide our planning across three unique horizons to match immediate actions to future outcomes:
1
Start of Exams
The crucial kickoff. Proactive habits put in place right before exam block to protect your focus, sleep, and physical energy.
2
End of Semester
The major transition benchmark. Requires consistent habits that protect progress during key evaluation weeks.

Next September
The long-term baseline. What deep personal change or systemic routines will you maintain next year?

LESSON EXTENSION GUIDE
Subject: Advisory / Guidance
Target Duration: 120 Minutes
Extending from 45 to 120 Minutes
A 45-minute lesson usually only allows students to write down generic, rushed goals. By expanding to 120 minutes , you shift the lesson from passive drafting to active design, critical peer-critique, and concrete obstacle planning. Use this guide alongside the student workbook.
120-Minute Master Schedule
Time block Activity Phase Focus & Classroom Task 00 - 15 Mins Interactive Hook & The "Why" Classroom discussion on physical sleep, social connection, and community choices. 15 - 45 Mins Pathway Selection & Horizons Students read exemplars and map Start of Exams, semesterly, and next September goals (Page 1). 45 - 85 Mins SMART Goal Workshop In-depth deconstruction (Page 2). Explicit metrics, calendar deadlines, and checks. 85 - 105 Mins Peer Critique & Speed Dating Students swap plans and critique the specific actionability using the Rubric. 105 - 120 Mins Defensive Planning & Commit If-Then obstacle mapping, reflection writing, and partner signature sign-off.
Facilitation Strategy: Phase 1 & 2
The Interactive Hook (Minutes 0-15):
Do not start with writing. Ask: "How many of you slept at least 7 hours last night?" Connect sleep, school belonging, and academic choices directly to post-secondary resilience.
"When we write goals, we tend to make them so massive they fall apart before review day. Today, we are breaking them down to clear milestones starting right at exams kickoff."
SMART Goal Deep-Dive (Minutes 45-85):
Model one failure. Write: "I want to do better in math." Ask students to tell you why it isn't SMART. Guide them to transform it: "By Nov 30, I will complete 3 practice problems with a study peer, tracked via my study logs."
