Instructional Sequence
5 min Intro
Focus as a "Superpower"
Engage students with the concept of focus as a hidden ability. Use Slide 1 to discuss everyday examples like building LEGOs or reading. Introduce the lesson goal: training our "brain zoom."
5 min Practice
Guided Practice: "Mindful Minute"
Lead a breathing exercise using Slide 2. Teach students that a wandering mind is normal; the "power" is in noticing it and gently bringing attention back to the breath.
10 min Challenge
Beat the Clock Challenge
Hand out the worksheet. Students work independently for 5 minutes (timed). Encourage them to use their "Mindful Minute" trick if they feel distracted. Circulate for positive reinforcement.
5 min Reflect
Reflect & Personal Focus Plan
Discuss the challenge: What was hard? What helped? Students complete the "My Focus Plan" by choosing one strategy (like deep breathing or sitting tall) to use next time.

Introduction: Focus as a "Superpower"
[Slide 1]
Teacher Script:
"Good morning, everyone! Today, we're going to talk about something super cool that's like having a secret superpower: FOCUS! Who knows what it means to focus?"
(Allow a few student responses. Guide them toward ideas like 'paying attention' or 'concentrating on one thing.')
"Exactly! Focus is when your brain is zoomed in on one thing, like a detective looking for clues. Can anyone tell me when you use your focus superpower? Maybe when you're reading a really good book? Or building a giant LEGO castle? Or even playing a favorite game?"
(Encourage sharing. Connect their experiences to the idea of sustained attention.)
"Today, our goal is to practice keeping our focus for five minutes. We're also going to find one special trick that helps US stay focused when our minds try to wander off, like a little puppy chasing a butterfly!"
5 MIN
Guided Practice: "Mindful Minute"
[Slide 2]
Teacher Script:
"Sometimes, even superheroes need to warm up their powers! We're going to try a 'Mindful Minute' to give our focus superpower a little stretch. Let's all sit up tall, with our feet flat on the floor. You can gently close your eyes, or pick one spot on the floor to look at."
"Now, notice your breath. Feel the air go in through your nose... and out through your mouth. Just notice it. Watch it like a gentle wave."
(Pause for 30-45 seconds. Offer gentle reminders.)
"If your mind starts to think about other things, that's normal! When that happens, just gently bring your attention back to your breath. No need to be mad at your brain, just say, 'Hey brain, let's come back to the wave.'"
10 MIN
Individual Challenge: Beat the Clock
[Slide 3]
Teacher Script:
"Alright, superheroes, it's challenge time! I'm going to give you a 'Beat the Clock' worksheet. Your mission is to work on this for 5 minutes, keeping your focus steady. If your mind wanders, use your 'Mindful Minute' trick to bring it back. Ready? Go!"
(Distribute worksheets. Set timer. Circulate with quiet encouragement.)

Group Share: Reflection
[Slide 4]
Teacher Script:
"And... time's up! Great job. What was it like to try and focus for five minutes? Did anything help you stay focused? Now, we're going to create our very own Focus Plan. Write down ONE thing that helps YOU focus. Is it deep breathing? Sitting tall? Telling yourself 'I can do this'?"
