Our Collaborative Canvas
🎨
Objective
To create a shared art piece that visually represents our classroom community, emphasizing individual contributions and the power of teamwork.
Materials
Large paper or poster board
Markers & crayons
Colored pencils & pastels
Stickers, glitter, glue sticks
Construction paper scraps
Instructions
1
Preparation (Teacher)
Lay the large sheet of paper on a central table or on the floor where all students can easily access it. Group materials in baskets nearby.
2
Introduction
Remind students of the community and teamwork discussion. Explain that today, they will create one big piece of art together that shows what makes their class special.
3
Brainstorming (5 minutes)
As a class, quickly brainstorm classroom symbols or values. Use these prompts:
• What do we like to do together?
• What colors represent our class?
• What shows kindness or learning?
• What are our class goals?
4
Individual Contributions, One Canvas
Everyone adds to the big canvas. Emphasize that there are no "private" sections—each contribution should somehow connect to or complement what others are drawing.
Teamwork Challenges
If two people want to draw in the same spot, how can they compromise ? If one student is finished, how can they help a friend?
Teacher Tips
• Play calm, collaborative music in the background to set a focused tone.
• Encourage "bridge-building"—drawing lines or patterns that connect different sections.
• Take a "time-out" halfway through to have everyone step back and look at the progress.

Facilitator Note
Gather students in a circle around the artwork. Give them a full minute of silence to just "take it in" before starting the conversation. Use these prompts to help them connect their individual actions to the group result.
Phase 1
Observing the Whole
The First Look
"What is the very first thing your eye noticed about our finished canvas?"
The Big Picture
"How is this different than if we all just drew on our own small pieces of paper?"
Phase 2
Individual to Community
Connection Check
"Can anyone find a place where their drawing 'connects' to a friend's drawing? How does that connection make the community stronger?"
Listening & Compromise
"Was there a moment when you had to share a marker or change your idea because of someone else? How did you handle it?"
Phase 3
Moving Forward
Pride Points
"What part of our community project makes you feel the most proud? Why?"
Next Steps
"How can we use this same 'teamwork power' when we are doing math, science, or playing at recess?"
"A community is like a canvas. One color is pretty, but many colors working together create a masterpiece."
