An intensive intervention lesson designed for upper elementary students to master self-regulation and cooperative peer interactions. Focuses on 'Taking a Break,' positive 'Self-Talk' strategies, and maintaining respectful, cooperative engagement with classmates in 70% of opportunities.
Distribute the Cooperation Control Scenarios. Place students in structured pairs. Explain that they will serve as each other's Co-Pilots and complete a Peer Interaction Log to sign off on successful, respectful cooperation.
Role-Play & Logging Routine:
Step A: Setup
Partners read the cards. One plays the "Overheater" (feeling frustrated), the other plays the "Teammate."
Step B: Shield Play
Act out the prompt. Practice using the self-talk shield, requesting a coolant break, and maintaining cooperation.
Step C: Log Sign-Off
The peer signs off on the "Signal Log" card if the student hits all cooperative checklist targets.
Prompting
Interactive Prompt Hierarchy
Prompting Self-Talk & Breaks
Use a least-to-most intrusive prompt sequence during natural classroom interactions:
Visual Cue: Show the "Coolant Break" icon on the anchor chart or tap your wrist thermometer.
Indirect Verbal: "Check your thermometer. Do you need to activate Shield Alpha or Beta?"
Direct Verbal: "Say: 'I need to take a 2-minute coolant break. I'll be right back.'"
Prompting Cooperation & Respect
For students experiencing difficulty sharing or active listening during projects:
Visual Cue: Point to the "Cooperative Maneuvers" on the wall anchor chart.
Indirect Verbal: "How can we merge our ideas right now?"
Direct Verbal: "Wait for Sarah to finish her sentence before sharing yours."
Phase 4
Debrief & Monitoring Strategy (5 Mins)
Reflect with students on their peer logs. Explain that you will continue to monitor their cooperative behaviors across unstructured school segments (transitions, cafeteria, groups) using the educator checklists.
"Outstanding work, Control Crew! Keep your self-talk shields high and use those breaks when you need a reboot. I will be scanning for respectful cooperation so you can hit your 70% success target!"
