Apply respectful language when expressing frustration.
Materials Needed
Cool Down Toolkit Slides
Toolbox Fill-in Worksheet
Pocket Peace Cards (laminated if possible)
Cool Color Reflection Page
Peace Blueprint Anchor Chart
Lesson Sequence
1. The Heat Sensor (10 mins)
Start by asking students how they know they are getting angry. Discuss "body signals" like hot face, clenched fists, or racing heart. Introduce the Cool Down Toolkit as a way to fix these "leaks" in our calm before they become floods.
2. Training with the Tools (20 mins)
Use the slides to introduce each strategy:
Deep Breathing & Counting: Model "The Box Breath" (in 4, hold 4, out 4, hold 4).
Cool Down Breaks: Explain how to ask for a break respectfully (e.g., "I need a moment to cool down so I can talk calmly later").
'I' Statements: Practice the formula: "I feel [emotion] when [action] because [reason]. Next time, please [request]."
3. Blueprint Construction (10 mins)
Students complete the Toolbox Fill-in Worksheet . Circulate and help students rephrase aggressive "You" statements into respectful "I" statements.
4. Final Polish (5 mins)
Distribute Pocket Peace Cards for students to tape to their desks or keep in their binders. Assign the Cool Color Reflection Page as an exit ticket or cool-down activity.
Teacher Tips
Differentiation
For younger students, use picture icons for 'I' statements. For older students, focus on the "because" part to help identify underlying needs.
Key Script
"We aren't trying to stop feeling angry. Anger is a normal emotion. We are just making sure our words and actions stay respectful even when we are hot."

Counting helps your brain take back control from your feelings.
Tool #2: Cool Down Break
The Script:
"I'm feeling upset. I need a 5-minute break so I can talk respectfully later."
Why use it?
It prevents "Explosive Words" that hurt feelings or get us into trouble.
How use it?
Ask calmly before you lose control. If you can't talk, use a pre-agreed hand signal.
Tool #3: Power Word Assembly
The Blueprint Formula
I FEEL
