01 The Signal Decrypt Protocol
1. DETECT THE SIGNAL
Catch your raw, automatic thought. It reacts instantly and is fueled by strong feelings rather than hard evidence.
"They are doing this on purpose."
2. SPOT THE JAMMER
Identify the "Thinking Trap" distorting your perspective. Is your brain twisting reality to protect your ego?
Trap: Mind Reading 🔮
3. DECRYPT & REFRAME
Reconstruct a balanced narrative using realistic facts. Find a neutral, helpful explanation of the event.
"They might just be busy right now."
02 Rogue's Gallery: Core Thinking Traps
🔮
Mind Reading
"I already know exactly what they think."
Assuming you know another person's hidden motives, feelings, or thoughts about you without any real, observable proof.
🌋
Catastrophizing
"This ruins everything forever."
Blowing a small mistake or incident completely out of proportion, expecting the absolute worst-case scenario to happen.
🌓
All-or-Nothing
"They always do this, I never win."
Using extreme language like always or never. Seeing scenarios as either perfect successes or complete failures.
🎯
Personalizing
"They are doing this because of me."
Believing other people's unrelated behaviors or general bad moods are a direct reaction to you, or blaming yourself.
The Decoder's Inquiry Toolkit
When cracking a conflict case file, put your automatic thoughts on the witness stand. Use these three essential investigative questions to unlock the truth:
A What hard physical evidence supports my thought? What evidence contradicts it?
B What is a neutral, alternative explanation for their behavior?
C What would I tell a friend who was stuck thinking this exact same thing?

EDUCATOR LESSON BLUEPRINT
Conflict Decoders Guide
TARGET GRADES: 5-9
SUBJECT: CBT / SEL
DURATION: 45 MINS
Lesson Overview & Objectives
This cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) inspired session helps students realize that their automatic interpretations of peer behaviors are often distorted. By identifying common "Thinking Traps" and utilizing objective peer evidence, students learn how to lower interpersonal anxiety, avoid reactive behaviors, and resolve schoolyard conflicts constructively.
KEY LEARNING TARGET:
Students will be able to identify "All-or-Nothing", "Mind Reading", "Catastrophizing", and "Personalizing" in real-world scenarios.
KEY COGNITIVE REFRAME SKILL:
Students will practice substituting a defensive automatic thought with a realistic, evidence-based alternative perspective.
45-Minute Lesson Pacing Blueprint
00-10m
Activating Protocol: The Headset Analogy
Ask students: "Have you ever played a game with static in your headset, or listened to someone whisper and assumed they were talking about you?" Explain how the human brain generates automatic signals that are distorted by cognitive "jammers" (Thinking Traps).
10-20m
The Handbook Review (Direct Instruction)
Distribute The Decoder's Handbook (Page 1). Walk through the three CBT steps: Detect the Signal, Spot the Jammer, and Decrypt/Reframe. Review the four major traps in the Rogue's Gallery, modeling simple physical examples for each.
20-35m
Small Group Investigation (Scenario Cards)
Divide the class into groups of 3-4. Assign each group 2-3 printed scenario cards (from Pages 2-3). Instruct groups to assign roles and complete the "Decoder Missions" on the cards through lively peer discussion.
35-45m
Debrief & Exit Code
Have groups present their favorite case file reframe to the whole room. Summarize the session by reminding students: "You don't have to believe everything your brain automatically tells you. Always check the evidence first."
