TEACHER GUIDE
Classroom Quest Setup 🏫
A step-by-step framework to launch, facilitate, and debrief the first-grade back-to-school scavenger hunt.
1. Pre-Quest Setup & Preparation
📍 The Squirrel Hunt: Hide a small plush squirrel, a laminated squirrel cutout, or a fun toy squirrel somewhere visible (e.g., near the window, sitting on the bookshelf, or on the whiteboard). Tell students they are searching for the "Classroom Squirrel!"
📍 Classroom Symbols: Ensure the Crucifix and Prayer Corner are clearly visible and approachable. Place a small kid-friendly Bible, a candle (LED), or holy card in the prayer space.
📍 Print Prep: Hand out clipboards if available! Clipboards make first graders feel like "official detectives" and give them a solid surface to write and color on as they move.
2. Quest Facilitation
Part 1: Room Explorer
- Walk through the worksheet icons as a whole group first, reading the labels aloud to support early readers.
- Encourage students to color each icon with crayons once they spot the real item in the room.
- Check off the boxes as a confirmation.
Part 2: Friend Finder
- Review simple greetings: "Hi, my name is ___. What is yours? Do you like pizza?"
- Classmates can write their own names on each other's papers, or students can practice writing a friend's name (helpers can assist!).
- Ensures active listening and early spelling practice.
3. Scaffolding & Differentiation
Support
Pair emergent readers or students with physical needs with a 5th-grade helper, instructional aide, or a reading partner.
Visual Aids
Hold up a sample pencil, point to the daily clock, or guide the whole class to the Prayer Corner together first before independent exploration.
Extension
For students who finish early, ask them to write one full sentence on the back of Page 2 describing their favorite area of the classroom.
4. Post-Quest Reflection Prompts
Gather students on the carpet and ask the following reflection questions:
Q1:
"Who can show us where the Daily Schedule is? Why is it helpful to have a schedule on the board?"
Q2:
"What is one quiet thing we can do when we visit our classroom's Prayer Corner?"
Q3:
"Did you find a friend who likes to draw, or who has a pet? What is their name?"
Q4:
"Who found our classroom's little squirrel friend? Where was he hiding?"
