Instructional Steps
Time Activity Facilitation Notes 5m Warm-Up: Think-Pair-Share Distribute Warm-Up. Students reflect (1m), pair (2m), and share as a class (2m). Focus on the "feeling" of chaos vs. order. 2m Introduction & Overview Use Slides 1-2. Introduce CHAMPS as a "proactive" tool. Explain that clear expectations benefit *everyone*. 15m Guided Reading & Discussion Chapter 8 (8m): Read movement section (5m). Discuss why explicit teaching matters. Ask: "What does C look like for the pencil sharpener?"
Chapter 10 (7m): Read routines section (5m). Discuss student benefits. Ask: "When would M be 'none'?"
|
| 3m | Cool-Down: Reflect | Distribute Cool-Down. Students reflect on one key takeaway and a personal action item for classroom flow. |
Pro-Tip: Practice, practice, practice! Just like any other skill, students need opportunities to practice these movement expectations with immediate feedback. Always display routine expectations visually.

CHAMPS: Managing Movement and Routines
A summary of key ideas from Chapters 8 and 10 of Jessica Sprick's "CHAMPS: A Proactive and Positive Approach."
Chapter 8: Teaching Students to Move Effectively
Chapter 8 focuses on how important it is to explicitly teach students how to move efficiently and appropriately within the classroom. Instead of just telling students to move, teachers should break down movement expectations using the CHAMPS acronym.
Why is this important?
• Prevents Disruptions: Reduces confusion.
• Maximizes Time: Smoother transitions.
• Promotes Safety: Organized movement.
• Fosters Independence: Students know what to do.
Movement Activities
• Entering/Exiting classroom
• Transitioning activities
• Getting materials
• Moving to small groups
C
Conversation: What talk level is allowed? (Silent, whisper, small group)
H
Help: How do students get help? (Raise hand, ask peer)
A
Activity: What is the specific movement activity?
M
Movement: How should students move? (Walking feet, direct path)
P
Participation: What does appropriate participation look like?
S
Success: Meeting movement expectations leads to classroom success!
Chapter 10: Routine-Based Expectations
Routines are predictable sequences of events that help the classroom run smoothly. Like movement, routines should be taught explicitly using the CHAMPS framework.
Why routines are essential
Structure: Reduces anxiety and uncertainty for students.
Focus: Students spend less time wondering and more time learning.
Empowerment: Students become self-reliant and responsible.
Common Routines
Beginning of class (Bell work)
Independent work time
Turning in assignments
Using classroom supplies
Ending of class (Dismissal)
Teacher Tip
Display routine expectations visually in the classroom. Review and practice routines regularly, especially after breaks or when new routines are introduced. Practice is key!
