🛠️
1. Setup & Assembly
Print & Laminate: Print the poster at large tabloid size. Print cards on thick cardstock and laminate to keep them clean.
Add Velcro Dots: Put sticky hard Velcro dots on the poster frames, and soft loops on the backs of all feeling and strategy cards.
Envelope Box: Tape a cute paper envelope next to the poster so options are easy for tiny hands to grab!
☁️
2. The Cozy Corner
Set up a quiet micro-space. Add these tactile sensory items to help children calm their bodies:
🧸 Plush Toys
⏳ Sand Timers
🎧 Headphones
📚 Picture Books
📢
3. Circle Time Intro
Teach children how to use the corner during active, happy learning times before they ever feel overwhelmed:
Stage A: Show the Emoji Faces
Hold up the feeling cards. Say: "This face is happy. Look at those bright yellow cheeks!"
Stage B: Trace the Wave
Put your finger on the poster wave. Practice deep, slow breathing as a group along the path.
Stage C: Pick a Plan
Act out different states (like sleepy or mad) and show how to choose matching calm cards.
💬
4. Co-Regulation Script
When a child has big, heavy feelings, sit with them and lead with a gentle, reassuring tone:
Step 1
Connect: "Your body has a lot of energy. Let's go visit our Calm Club together."
Step 2
Label: "How does your body feel? Let's find the card and stick it here."
Step 3
Calm: "Which Calm Card can we do? Let's blow bubbles or hug a teddy!"
💡
Educator Tip: All Feelings are Allowed!
Avoid using the Calm Corner as a "time-out" or punishment spot. Instead, treat it as an empowering headquarters where children gain control and feel safe to reset. Always validate before correcting behavior!
