Every knight needs a strategy to calm the stormy dragon! Try these three magic keys, then design your ultimate custom coping skill.
1. Physical Moves
"The Drawbridge Stretch"
Reach your arms high into the sky like a raised castle drawbridge. Hold for 5 seconds, drop them loose, and sigh!
Try it 3 times!
2. Dragon Breath
"Cool the Cocoa"
Breathe in deep through your nose. Then blow slowly through your lips to cool down your imaginary mug of sweet cocoa.
Do 5 deep breaths!
3. Mind Anchors
"The 3-2-1 Look"
Anchor your mind. Name 3 green things you can see, 2 shapes you can find, and 1 quiet sound you can hear.
Find them now!

Target Grade Grades K - 5
Lesson Objective
Students will connect abstract emotional states to concrete physical body sensations (body-mapping), identify personal feeling triggers, and choose action-oriented calming strategies to de-escalate "stormy" emotions.
Cozy Classroom Prep
Provide colors matching the key (red, yellow, blue, green). Soft classroom lighting or quiet focus music is recommended during the body-mapping activity to help students tune in to physical cues.
Step-by-Step Lesson Map (30-40 Minutes)
1
The Cozy Castle Hook (5 Mins)
Introduce the idea that all knights experience stormy feeling weather. Explain that our bodies have built-in "weather maps" that warn us through fast hearts, tight muscles, or butterflies.
2
Body-Mapping Exploration (12 Mins)
Have students color in their body-maps. Guide them through prompts: "Where does anger live? Is it hot in your hands, or tight in your chest?" Allow quiet independent drawing time.
3
Key Practice & Shield Design (15 Mins)
Practice the three Coping Keys together as a group. Ask students to select their favorite strategy and design their "Golden Shield" on page 2. Let students share strategies with peers.
What to Say: Teacher Modeling Prompts
When modeling body mapping: "My alarm bell sounds in my shoulders! When I'm feeling angry, they raise up like castle towers. Where do you feel your alarm?"
When practicing the Castle Breeze: "Let's smell the castle gardens (breath in)... now let's blow out the cozy castle lanterns very gently (slow breath out)."
Differentiating Support
- For non-writers, encourage purely drawing feelings inside the shield container.
- Help students identify "where" physical sensations reside by doing a guided body scan.
Lesson Wrap-up Questions
- How does knowing our body clues help us choose our coping tools early?
- Which coping key felt easiest or most calming to use today?
