Total Time: 30–40 Minutes
Check-In: 5 min
Social Story: 10 min
Slides & Discussion: 10 min
Activity & Exit: 10 min
1. Warm-Up & Pre-Survey
Hand the student the "Feelings Check-In" sheet.
Script: "Hi there! Today we're going to talk about being a 'Brain Boss.' Sometimes when we have to do work or take a test, our brains feel a little worried. That's okay! Before we start, can you circle how you feel right now about tests?"
2. The Social Story: Sam the Scientist
Read the "Brave Brain Social Story" together. Point to pictures.
Script: "Let's read about Sam. Sam's heart goes fast when he sees a big page of math. Does your heart ever do that? Sam learned that his brain is like a muscle—it just needs a little oxygen to work better. Let's see how he used his 'Bubble Breath'."
3. Slide Deck: Calm & Ready
Use the "Calm & Ready" Slides. Emphasize the 'X the Distractor' tip.
Script: "Look at this slide. When we see a question we don't know, we don't give up! We look for the answers that look 'silly' or wrong and cross them out. It makes the page look less scary, doesn't it?"
4. Quick Activity: Five-Finger Breathing
Use the "Focus Finder" activity sheet.
Script: "Let's try Sam's trick. Put your hand on the paper. We're going to trace your fingers. When we go up, we breathe in. When we go down, we breathe out. This tells your brain: 'I am safe. I am the Boss.'"
5. Wrap Up & Post-Survey
Review the exit ticket and do the post-survey.
Script: "You did amazing today. You have two tools now: the Bubble Breath and Crossing Out Silly Answers. How do you feel about tests now? Let's check in one last time."
Quick Tips for the Student
Calming
If they freeze, say: "Put your pencil down. Let's do 3 big breaths together."
Math/Reading
Read questions aloud to them if allowed. Focus on one problem at a time by covering the rest with paper.
