Answering the Unanswerable Question
REF: INTERVIEW-SKILLS-01
Introduction (0-1 minute)
"Good morning/afternoon, everyone! Today, we're going to tackle a question that almost everyone dreads, whether it's in a job interview, a college application, or even just a conversation with a mentor. We're talking about the 'weakness question.'"
Warm-Up: What's Your Greatest Weakness? (10 minutes)
"Let's start with our warm-up. Take a look at the screen. You see the question: 'What's your greatest weakness?' I want you to take a moment and just think about it. You don't have to share your answer with anyone yet. Just reflect: How does this question make you feel? What's your immediate reaction or first thought?"
[Allow 1-2 minutes for silent reflection]
"Now, who's brave enough to share their feelings about this question? Not your answer, but how it makes you feel or why you think it's such a tricky question to answer effectively?"
[Listen to responses; validate; guide towards interviewer motives: self-awareness, growth mindset, honesty]
"Exactly! It's tough because we often feel like we have to be perfect. But here's the secret: interviewers aren't looking for perfection. They're looking for self-awareness and a desire to grow. So, how can we 'flip the script' on this?"
Activity: Turning Weaknesses into Strengths (15 minutes)
"Now, we're going to dive into how we can turn those tricky 'weaknesses' into 'growth opportunities.' I'm handing out a worksheet called 'Flipping the Script on Weaknesses'."
"Your task for the next 10-12 minutes is to work individually. In Part 1, you'll identify a personal weakness. In Part 2, you'll analyze how it shows up and its negative impacts. And in Part 3, you'll brainstorm concrete steps you're taking to improve."
"Remember: if procrastination is your weakness, your action plan might involve using a planner. Focus on being honest but also constructive. How can you show you're actively working on it?"
[Circulate and offer guidance on actionable steps]
Interactive: Partner Q&A Practice (15 minutes)
"Alright, let's put our strategies into practice! Find a partner. I'll give each pair a set of 'Tough Questions Partner Practice Cards'."
"One person draws a card and asks the question. The partner practices answering, using the 'flipping the script' approach. After each answer, give each other constructive feedback. What did they do well? What could they improve?"
"Spend about 7 minutes on each role. The goal is to build confidence and refine your responses."
[Monitor pairs, listen in, offer suggestions]

What have you learned (or what do you hope to learn) from this process?
Part 4: Craft Your Response
Combine your weakness, action plan, and learning into a concise (2-3 sentence) interview response. Be ready to practice this aloud!
