Why This Matters
Understanding what makes students feel safe and welcomed fosters trust, empathy, and a positive classroom community. By explicitly discussing these factors, we ensure every voice contributes to a supportive school climate and a stronger sense of belonging.
Preparation
• Review lesson flow and objectives in this Blueprint guide.
• Preview the Feeling Secure Presentation.
• Print one Safety Snapshot Poll per student.
• Gather materials for Session 2 (poster board, markers, magazines, glue).
• Post chart paper or clear the whiteboard for student ideas.

Learning Objective

Explain the 1–5 scale (1 = Not safe; 5 = Very safe).

Display the Feeling Secure Presentation.
Walk through definitions: Safety, Belonging, and Welcoming Behaviors.
Ask volunteers to share a quick thought on what makes them feel "at home" in school.

Facilitator Discussion Guide
Use this guide to facilitate an open, respectful conversation about school safety. The goal is to build empathy and identify actionable behaviors that make everyone feel included.
1. Set-Up (2 Min)
• Arrange chairs in a circle so every student has a clear line of sight.
• Explain that only one person speaks at a time.
2. Establish Norms (2 Min)
Listen respectfully —no interrupting.
"I" Statements —speak from your experience.
Confidentiality —what stays here, stays here.
Right to Pass —sharing is optional.

Visually Building Our Safe Space
Session Overview
Today, you will work in creative teams to turn our discussion themes into a visual masterpiece. Use images, words, and symbols to show what makes our school community a place where everyone belongs.
Instructions

Review & Choose (10 min)
Look at our "Circle of Trust" keywords. Pick 1-2 themes (like Kindness or Respect) to be the star of your collage.

Plan Your Layout (10 min)
Sketch a rough plan on your poster board. Where will your main images go? What words will you write in big letters?

Create & Layer (30 min)
Cut out images from magazines or draw your own. Glue them down, layer them up, and add color with markers or pencils.

Gallery Walk (10 min)
Display your work! Walk around and leave "I Notice" or "I Wonder" sticky notes on other teams' collages.
