Color Feelings Weekly Guide Week 1 • Emotional Identification
Color My Feelings
Mess & Mindset 1-Hour Process Art Session
Session Length
60 Minutes
1.5 - 5 Years
Weekly Big Idea
Our feelings are like colors inside of us. Some are warm and bright, some are quiet and cool. We can use paint to show how we feel, even before we have the words to say it.
Sensory Materials
Tempera paint: Red, yellow, blue, black, and white.
Texturizers: Coarse salt, cornmeal, or coffee grounds.
Papers: Heavyweight posterboard (11x14" or larger).
Tools: Chubby brushes, sponge rollers, and bare hands !
Teacher Prep Checklist
Pre-mix paint colors with texturizers in shallow pie tins for easy hand-dipping.
Tape down large heavyweight papers to the table using painter's tape to prevent slipping.
Set up a wash station with warm water and damp washcloths nearby for messy hands.
60-Minute Session Flow
0 - 15 MIN
Circle Time Warm-up
Introduce emotion colors. Use colored boards: "When I feel happy, my body is warm like yellow. Let's make a happy smile together!" Sing the weekly song.
Weekly Song (Tune: If You're Happy and You Know It)
"If you're angry and you know it, stomp your feet! (STOMP!)
If you're happy and you know it, shout hooray! (HOORAY!)
Every feeling that we have is okay!"
15 - 40 MIN
Hands-on Process Art & Side Stations
Transition to the art tables. Children select colors, use stamps/handprints, and blend colors freely on large boards. Set out 1-2 quiet side activities for early finishers.
40 - 60 MIN
Closing Circle: Book & Calm-Down
Transition to the rug. Read The Color Monster by Anna Llenas. Conclude with a tactile lotion calm-down activity to soothe senses and transition back to caregivers.

The Art Experience
Step-by-Step Process & Early Finisher Side Stations
Activity Focus: Hand-Printing & Textures
1
Sensory Introduction & Painting
Provide paint tins. Children press hands into paint and stamp, slide, or tap onto papers. Talk about sensations (rough, cool, squishy).
2
The Closing Circle: Book Reading
Gather children on the rug under dimmed lighting. Read The Color Monster . Point to illustrations: "Look how the monster mixes his colors. Which color feeling are you carrying right now?"
3
Calm-Down: Quiet Color Breathing
Provide a colored felt heart to each child. Guide them to breathe in deep while smelling the "air," and blow gently onto the heart to make it "fly" slightly in their hands.
4
Calm-Down: "Cozy Hand Butter"
Place a tiny dollop of lavender-scented baby lotion on each child's palm. Show them how to slowly rub their hands together, giving themselves a warm, soothing hand massage to ground their bodies.
What to Say (Facilitation Script)
• Describe the work: "I see long, fast red lines going back and forth across your paper. Your arms are working so hard!"
• Lotion Prompt: "Rub, rub, rub. Smell the lavender. Rub it slowly over your fingers. Say 'thank you, hands' for doing such beautiful, messy painting today."
Early Finisher Side Stations
Have these easy, self-directed side activities set up at a separate small table for early finishers:
1. Sensory Shaker Bottles
Plastic bottles filled with baby oil, water, food coloring (Red, Yellow, Blue), and star glitter. Sealed with hot glue. Early finishers can roll and shake them to see colors blend.
2. Dry Brush Reveal
Provide dry stiff paintbrushes and plain corrugated cardboard panels. Let kids "paint" water onto cardboard. The water darkens the surface temporarily, creating an easy, mess-free track that dries in minutes.
Playdough Faces Station
Blank laminate face mats and colored playdough. Invite them to mold sensory facial expressions: Squeezing big curved dough smiles or pressing dot teardrops.
