WIN-WIN SHOWDOWN
Engineering solutions where everyone wins. Shifting from "Me vs. You" to "Us vs. The Problem."
DESIGN STAGE: INSTRUCTIONAL INTRO
SLIDE 01 / 06
ANALYSIS STAGE
The Conflict Collision
MODEL: REF-02
01. MY WAY
The Power Tug-of-War
One person wins completely, the other loses completely. Causes anger and breaks trust.
Result: I Win / You Lose
02. HALFWAY
The Split Difference
Both of us give up things we really want to meet in the middle. Better, but leaves both unsatisfied.
Result: We Both Lose Some
03. WIN-WIN
The Bridge Build
We work together to design a completely new solution that meets BOTH of our actual needs.
Result: We Both Win!
Why split the difference when you can build a bigger solution?
SLIDE 02 / 06
THE SECRET LOGIC
Positions vs. Needs
SPEC: BD-03
THE POSITION (THE "WHAT")
"What we demand loudly"
• Our demand, loud statement, or fixed rule
• "Give me the laptop right now!"
• Leaves zero room to build a bridge or negotiate
THE NEED (THE "WHY")
"Why we actually want it"
• The actual feelings, worries, or goals behind the demand
• "I need to finish my homework on time so I don't lose free time later."
• Opens up 100 new options for creative solving
Negotiators do not argue over positions . We solve for needs !
SLIDE 03 / 06
EXECUTION BLUEPRINT
The Win-Win Bridge Process
PLAN: ENG-04
01
Inspect Beneath
Stop arguing over rules or positions. Ask: "What do you actually need? Why is that important to you?"
GOAL: Identify both needs
02
Design Options
Brainstorm wildcard ideas that cover both needs. No idea is too silly! Throw them on the blueprint.
GOAL: Quantity over quality first
03
Build & Lock In
Select the best option. Make an explicit agreement: "I will do X, and you will do Y to make sure we both win."
GOAL: Put it to action!
This is the universal conflict blueprint used by expert engineers.
SLIDE 04 / 06
LAB PRACTICAL
Case Study: The Shared Tablet
LAB NO. 01
The Conflict
Sam and Taylor are arguing over the single classroom iPad. Both want it right now during indoor recess.
Positions: "It's my turn!" vs "No, it's my turn!"
S
Sam's Need
Sam wants to watch a quick tutorial for a coding project due tomorrow.
Underlying: Homework Help
T
Taylor's Need
Taylor wants to check high scores on a game that resets in 10 minutes.
Underlying: Quick Check-in
Discussion Challenge: How can they both get exactly what they need? (Who goes first? For how long?)

01
INSPECT BENEATH (Find the Needs)
STAGE 1
Don't just fight over demands (Positions ). Look beneath the surface to find out why they want it (Needs ).
Ask: "What is the most important part of this for you?"
02
DESIGN WILDCARDS (Brainstorm Options)
STAGE 2
Don't get stuck on one single solution. Challenge yourselves to brainstorm at least three wildcard options that cover both sides' needs.
Ask: "How can we get creative so we both get what we need?"
03
BUILD & LOCK IN (Make the Agreement)
STAGE 3
Select the best wildcard option. Construct an explicit, clear verbal contract detailing who does what.
Ask: "Does this fully solve both of our needs? Let's lock it in!"
Code of the Win-Win Builder
No Compromise Defatigation
Avoid lazily saying 'let's just share it' before checking what each person actually wants to do.
The Double Check
An agreement isn't locked in unless BOTH players smile and give a firm thumbs up or high five.
"Don't fight over the hammer. Build the bridge."

TASK: Analyze positions, discover underlying needs, and build the Win-Win Bridge.
Toolkit Item #2
1. Recess Ruckus PLAYGROUND
The Clash: Maya and Leo are fighting over the only basketball at recess. Both demand it.
Maya's Need: Wants to practice free throws for her basketball game tonight.
Leo's Need: Wants a fun, active ball game to play with 4 classmates.
2. Slide Show Grudge CLASSROOM
The Clash: Aria and Zane both demand to write and design the presentation slides.
Aria's Need: Nervous about public speaking; wants a quiet, safe behind-the-scenes role.
Zane's Need: Loves designing animations and visual graphics for slides.
3. Lunch Table Clash LUNCHROOM
The Clash: Ben and Sam are arguing loudly over sitting in the end seat of the long table.
Ben's Need: Gets sensory overload easily; needs a quiet end spot with space.
Sam's Need: Needs to leave quickly to report for school safety patrol duty.
4. Chromebook Clash MEDIA LAB
The Clash: Chloe and Devon both demand the last working Chromebook during free work hour.
Chloe's Need: Needs to look up reference photos of red pandas for her art sketch.
Devon's Need: Needs to quickly type and submit his weekly spelling paragraphs.
5. Gym Game Gripe GYM CLASS
The Clash: Jaden demands soccer, while Mia demands kickball for their free play block.
Jaden's Need: Wants to practice kicking and running for his upcoming club tryouts.
Mia's Need: Wants a game where their whole big group of 12 can easily play together.
6. Poster Paper Pan ART ROOM
The Clash: Eli and Sienna are pulling on the last large sheet of blue poster board.
Eli's Need: Creating a 3D ocean scene; needs a solid blue background for "water".
