Focus Filter Teacher Guide
The Focus Filter
Teacher Lesson Guide
Grades: K-2
Topic: Executive Function / Attention
Objective
Students will define "focus" as looking at what matters and understand "distractions" as things that try to steal our attention. They will create and use physical "Focus Filters" to practice blocking out distractions.
Materials
- Focus Filter Slide Deck
- Focus Glasses Craft Template
- Distraction Detective Worksheet
- Scissors, Markers, and Glue
- Yellow or Clear cellophane (optional)
1. The Hook: The Blurry World (5 mins)
Teacher Script:
"Everyone, look around the room. There is SO MUCH to see! There are posters, toys, other students, the clock, even a fly on the wall! Sometimes, our brains get overwhelmed because they try to look at everything at once. It's like having a messy desk where you can't find your pencil. Today, we're going to learn how to use a secret superpower called 'The Focus Filter' to find exactly what we need."
2. Direct Instruction: The Filter Metaphor (10 mins)
1
Define Focus: Use the slide deck to show a "blurry" image versus a "focused" image. Explain that focus is like a flashlight—it only shines on one thing at a time.
2
The Distraction Monsters: Introduce the idea of "distractions" as little monsters that try to pull your flashlight away. Examples: A loud noise (Bellowing Bob), a wiggly neighbor (Wiggling Wendy), or a daydream (Daydream Dave).
3
The Filter Solution: Explain that a "filter" lets the good stuff in and keeps the distracting stuff out. Tell them they are going to build their own physical Focus Filters today.

The Focus Filter: Continued
3. Guided Practice: Crafting Filters (15 mins)
Step 1
Cut out the Focus Glasses template carefully.
Step 2
Decorate the frames with "Focus Symbols" (eyes, stars, bright colors).
Step 3
If using cellophane, glue it over the lens holes to create a "tint."
4. Independent Practice: Focus Hunt (15 mins)
Hand out the Distraction Detective Challenge. Students must put on their glasses and look for specific items in the classroom or on the worksheet while you provide "controlled distractions" (soft music, walking around, tapping a pencil).
Teacher Tip: Controlled Distractions
While students are looking through their filters, try to be a "Distraction Monster." Make a funny sound or hold up a colorful toy. When they finish, ask: "Was it easier to ignore me with your glasses on? Why?"
5. Closing: Internalizing the Filter (5 mins)
Explain that eventually, they won't need paper glasses. They can imagine they have "Invisible Focus Filters" in their brains that they can turn on anytime.
Reflection Questions
- "What was the hardest thing to ignore today?"
- "How did the glasses help your eyes stay in one spot?"
- "When can you use your Focus Filter during the school day?" (Reading, listening to instructions, etc.)
