The Big Picture
Meet CBT
Your Mind is a Wide, Open Sky ☀️
In your mind, thoughts are like the weather. Some days are beautifully bright and warm, while other days bring passing storm clouds.
CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) is like learning to be your own expert weather-watcher. It helps us notice the stormy clouds, understand them, and gently guide the sunshine back.
Stormy Clouds
Sad, angry, or scary thoughts that try to block out your light.
Warm Sunshine
Realistic, balanced, and positive thoughts that help you grow.
You cannot stop the clouds from passing, but you can always find the sun.

The Connection
The CBT Triangle
The Sunshine Connection 🔗
Everything in your mind and body is linked. When you change how you think, your feelings and actions will change too!
1. Thoughts
What you say inside
The words, stories, and pictures your brain creates. E.g., "I'll mess up my presentation."
2. Feelings
What you feel inside
Your emotions (nervous, sad, proud) and physical body feelings (butterflies in tummy, fast heartbeat).
3. Actions
What you do
Your choices and behaviors. E.g., hiding under the covers, avoiding public speaking, or practicing again.
Shift one corner of the triangle, and the whole triangle moves!

Thought Traps
Brain Clouds
When Brain Clouds Roll In ☁️
Sometimes our brains play tricks on us. Psychologists call these cognitive distortions, but we can call them Brain Clouds. They are sneaky thought habits that twist the truth and make things look darker than they really are!
They are automatic
They pop into our heads instantly. They aren't "facts" or the "truth" — they are just habitual reflexes.
You can spot them!
Once you learn their names and sneaky tricks, you can spot them instantly and say, "Aha! That's just a cloudy thought!"
Not everything your brain tells you is the complete truth!

Spotting the Traps
The Two Big Clouds
Meet Two Common Brain Clouds
1. Catastrophizing
"The Storm Maker"
Taking a small mistake or worry and blowing it up into a huge, terrible disaster.
Example in 6th Grade:
"I failed this pop quiz... I'm going to fail 6th grade, drop out of school, and live under a bridge!"
2. All-or-Nothing
"Black & White Skies"
Seeing everything in extremes. Either you are perfect, or you are a complete failure.
Example in 6th Grade:
"I didn't get invited to Clara's sleepover. Absolutely NO ONE likes me, and I have zero friends."
Can you think of a time when a brain cloud tried to trick you?

The Brain Cloud Directory: 5 More Sneaky Traps!
Mind Reading
Assuming you know exactly what others are thinking about you.
"They all think my outfit is super weird."
Fortune Telling
Predicting a bad outcome before things even start.
"I'm going to totally bomb the tryouts tomorrow."
Personalization
Blaming yourself for bad events outside of your control.
"My parents are arguing because I did badly on my chores."
Emotional Reasoning
Believing that because you feel bad, things must actually be bad.
"I feel so stupid, so I must be stupid."
Labeling (The Sticker Trap)
Putting a giant, permanent negative label on yourself based on one single mistake.
"I lost my jacket today. I am a complete loser and can't do anything right."
Our brains can create many different kinds of clouds—but we can spot them all!

Be the Judge
Thoughts on Trial
Put Your Thoughts on Trial! ⚖️
When a brain cloud tries to tell you a scary story, don't just believe it! Put that thought in the courtroom and act like a fair, sunny judge.
Ask for the cold, hard facts—not just feelings or fearful guesses.
Judge's Checklist
1
Is this thought 100% true? Do I have solid proof?
2
What is the actual proof against this cloudy thought?
3
What is the most reasonable, balanced outcome?
4
If my best friend had this thought, what would I tell them?
