Why This Lesson Matters
Building resilience starts with knowing when to ask for help. This lesson uses a fun, snowy theme to lower the stakes for practicing vulnerability. By focusing on "Asking" and "Thanking," students develop the core linguistic and social scripts needed to maintain healthy, supportive friendships.
Instructional Steps
2m
1. Introduction
Set the stage! Tell students they are going on a "Snowy Friendship Adventure." Explain that even the best explorers need a helping hand sometimes. Today, we're learning how to ask for help and how to say "Thank You" like a pro.
3m
2. Video Viewing
Watch "Getting Help - Building Resilience with Hunter and Eve." Challenge students to look for two things:
What words did Hunter use to ask for help?
How did Hunter show they were thankful?
2m
3. Activity Setup
Hand out the Scenario Snowball Cards and Snowflake Tokens . Divide students into small "Exploration Teams." Explain that they will take turns being the "Explorer" (who needs help) and the "Helper."
6m
4. Role-Playing Activity
Teams draw a card and act it out. After the "Explorer" successfully asks and the "Helper" helps, the "Explorer" gives a Snowflake Token to the "Helper" as a sign of thanks.
Differentiation: Use the Multilingual Support Cards for ELL students to provide clear visual and translated cues for "Help" and "Thank you."
2m
5. Closure
Gather back together. Ask: "How did it feel to ask for help?" and "How did it feel to be thanked?" Remind them that asking for help makes our friendships stronger!
